Historia
West Berlin, 1979. Helen Abell oversees the CIA's network of safe houses, rare havens for field agents and case officers amidst the dangerous milieu of a city in the grips of the Cold War. Helen's world is upended when, during her routine inspection of an agency property, she overhears a meeting between two unfamiliar people speaking a coded language that hints at shadowy realities far beyond her comprehension. Before the day is out, she witnesses a second unauthorized encounter, one that will place her in the sight lines of the most ruthless and powerful man at the agency.

Historia
Jane Whitefield is a Native American guide who leads solitary outcasts through hostile territory to escape the vengeance of their enemies. But the shaded forest paths her Seneca ancestors might have followed on such missions have all been converted to superhighways, and now the safest way stations are crowded urban buildings that offer the camouflage of anonymity. Still, the supply of runaways - and the need for a woman who will take great risks to save them - have never been greater.

Historia
It all begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in a Manhattan office tower. Each presses a button for their floor, but the elevator proceeds, non-stop, to the top. Once there, it stops for a few seconds, and then plummets. Right to the bottom of the shaft. It appears to be a horrific, random tragedy. But then, on Tuesday, it happens again, in a different Manhattan skyscraper. And when Wednesday brings yet another high-rise catastrophe, one of the most vertical cities in the world - and the nation’s capital of media, finance, and entertainment - is plunged into chaos.

Ok but not great
Revisado: 07-22-24
For a great elevator thriller, The Escape Room is a standout. This book does not equal it in plot or character development. Ending reveal seemed outlandish, and story line meandered on the way to its conclusion.

Top notch Don Winslow
Revisado: 06-07-24
Final installment of the Danny Ryan drama in three acts does not disappoint. Returns to the grittiness of the first book and more believable than the second. Full of insider details on the world of Las Vegas.

Dynamic and authentic
Revisado: 05-12-24
I had read this author’s WWII series but had missed this early work, written in the 90s. It’s focus is shipboard life in the Gulf of Tonkin during combat in Vietnam, with a parallel plot line about wives left at home during deployment. I was onboard ship in the Gulf of Tonkin during Vietnam and to me this book crackled with authenticity in its dialogue, deceptions of operational matters, of life aboard ship at that time, of the issues and tensions aboard. First rate narration by the male narrator - the pronounced southern drawl affected by the female narrator seemed s as not strained. Some nitpicking about the mental conflicts the central character wrestled with, but a minor detail. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.

Historia
Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors—but it’s too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside. More than two hundred feet below the surface, engineer Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon are waist-deep in water and fighting for their lives.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-30-24
After having very much enjoyed this author’s previous work “Falling”, I had great expectations for Drowning. But the story was so unrealistic in regards to the coincidences of the character relationships, the ability of a civilian to be given such deference and access by the authorities ostensibly in control, and the repeated last second turn of events. The female narrator sets such frantic tone in the opening sequences that become annoying / and in the rest of the book her narration is clearly inferior to that of the much more polished and credible male narrator. Great concept to the story that unfortunately is not borne out - don’t waste your time.

Not his best work
Revisado: 09-15-23
Despite a strong beginning and some interesting characters, the story ultimately meanders into too many sub-plots and the main characters disappear while other story lines play out. Some characters who initially present as thugs suddenly become very canny and exceptionally well -spoken in not very credible transformations.

Historia
When Phil Kramer is shot dead on a deserted suburban street in the middle of the night, his wife, Emily, is left with an emptied bank account and a lot of questions. How could Phil leave her penniless? What was he going to do with the money? And, most of all, who was he if he wasn't the man she thought she married?
Jerry Hobart has some questions of his own. It's none of his business why he was hired to kill Phil Kramer. But now that he's been ordered to take out Kramer's widow, he figures there's a bigger secret at work - and maybe a bigger payoff.

Whodunit with a twist
Revisado: 08-22-23
Not your usual story line. Disparate characters are revealed one by one and their connection to the central issue - “who dunit” - is introduced. Tension builds and new questions arise as to how things will play out. Very enjoyable and full of surprises.

These are some of the last words Jack Givins’ father spoke to him before he was whisked away by witness protection, leaving Jack and his mother to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives as best they could. Years later, Jack is a grown man with problems of his own. He’s a talented but struggling author, barely scraping by on the royalties from his moderately successful first book. So when the U.S. Marshals approach him with a lucrative opportunity, he’s in no position to turn them down.

Stick to submarines
Revisado: 07-22-23
Without giving way too much of the plot, there are two story lines: one a shot based international thriller and the other undersea warfare. The author clearly knows his way around sunny, and the submarine part of the book crackles with authenticity. The other part is unrealistic- with far too many coincidences and often stilted dialogue. Narration is good and workmanlike so the alternating plots move along well.
