Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

Sadly too many of us know someone who finds themselves in this situation, all we can do is support in any way we can. I think abused people might gain some courage from this true to life story. Tragic and inspirational at the same time.

Historia
The Fifties is a sweeping social, political, economic, and cultural history of the 10 years that Halberstam regards as seminal in determining what our nation is today. Halberstam offers portraits of not only the titans of the age: Eisenhower, Dulles, Oppenheimer, MacArthur, Hoover, and Nixon; but also of Harley Earl, who put fins on cars; Dick and Mac McDonald and Ray Kroc, who mass-produced the American hamburger; Kemmons Wilson, who placed his Holiday Inns along the nation's roadsides; and more.

History Does Repeat Itself Again and Again!
Revisado: 08-10-24
This is a great book - for those of you that have lived long enough to remember this period, filled with facts and important events. . For those of you that have not, there are things you ought to know and learn to help understand why and how our country is in the state that it is, I found this book to be a reminder of those days good and bad. I am reading what I thought would be equally enlightening, The Children- so far I am not as impressed, to repetitive without much substance but I have 13 hrs to go.

Nothing remarkably different than most stories about these agents, still interesting though. A wake up call as to how lucky we are to have such brave people in times of war.

Historia
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

I didn’t learn a whole lot so stopped listening after chapter 7 it got yo be too boring although narration was fine. One thing is for sure is how easy it is to go down a path of failure and not be able to get out especially if you are born into it. Life is definitely not fair.

Very touching .. typical family story —makes one reflect on what’s important in life. Lastly not to wait until the end of a family member’s life to come together. It was a bit too long in some places, otherwise enjoyable.

Historia
In 1918, after four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Three years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel is tending the grave of her newly lost infant when she hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up on shore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

I enjoyed the story although sad. It made me appreciate motherhood , a gift squandered by too many. I had difficulty with the accent at times, that was the only drawback.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

An Unbroken will to Survive
Revisado: 01-10-11
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I couldn't stop listening- waiting for the day of his freedom and then for the day of release from his own torment brought upon him by his tomentor. It really makes you think about the will of man to survive - no matter what..... and then to still find it in himself to forgive. I can understand why he is considered to be an infamous hero.

Historia
In Volume 2 of Alone, Manchester challenges the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-1940, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors - at one point he had to put up his home for sale - he remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and magazine articles. He was disowned by his own party, dismissed by the BBC, Fleet Street, and the social and political establishments as a warmonger, and twice nearly lost his seat in Parliament. Churchill stood almost alone against Nazi aggression and the British and French...
