Historia
The man’s body is found in the early morning light by a local dog walker in the park outside Rosebank, a home for troubled teens in the coastal village of Longwater. The victim is Josh, a staff member, who was due to work the previous night but never showed up. DI Vera Stanhope is called out to investigate the death, with her only clue being the disappearance of one of the home’s residents, fourteen-year-old Chloe Spence. Vera can’t bring herself to believe that a teenager is responsible for the murder, but even she can’t dismiss the possibility.

Disappointed in Vera
Revisado: 09-13-24
I have loved every single Vera Stanhope book. I especially love how complicated and imperfect Vera’s character is. In this one, though, I really didn’t like her, which was new. I’m not sure whether the author did this on purpose, but. I found myself impatient with her selfishness and that she didn’t seem to learn from her mistakes, especially Holly’s death, though she seemed to think about it quite a bit. I’d leave if she was my boss.

Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

Thoroughly enjoyed this latest by Peter Grainger
Revisado: 08-28-23
If you’re looking for a fast paced, exciting thriller, this book is not for you. It did have exciting moments, though. I loved the fact that the mystery is only one small part of the story. The character development is excellent and the ride inside DC Smith’s head quite wonderful. The narration is excellent also. I’ve enjoyed every single one in the series. This newest was no exception.

I’m still enjoying this series. Unlike many others that begin to get sloppy and diluted if they go on too long, this one continues to be well- written and engaging.

Historia
On a dull and dreary October day, Lori Shepherd and her husband set off for a quiet weekend without the kids. But before they go, he must pay a visit to a reclusive client. After Lori drops him off, a storm that's been brewing intensifies, and she ends up stranded in an ancient, rambling inn named for a king's ransom in smuggled goods that passed through the village in ages past. When Lori begins hearing footsteps and strange noises, Aunt Dimity reminds her that the inn is almost certainly haunted but that not all ghosts are interested in harming the living. But the longer Lori is stuck at the inn, the stranger things seem.

Great story / narration not as good as usual
Revisado: 05-09-20
I’m a great Sara Paretsky fan and enjoy the way she brings human rights issues into her stories. However, in Dead Land V.I. seemed to be fighting with people all the time and every conversation felt like a shouting match. I usually enjoy S. Ericksen’s narration, but in this book I felt like she was always yelling. I had to keep turning down the volume. Other than that, it was a great story.

A bit silly but fun

I enjoyed the read but it as too predictable. The characters were fun if somewhat unbelievable. The story summary gave away the plot so there weren’t very many surprises.

Another well-crafted story
Revisado: 08-06-18
I don't know what it is about the character of Vera Stanhope that makes her such a delight. Probably that she is so human and honest about her feelings and shortcomings. This mystery, like her others, is character driven, which I love. Ann Cleeves is a master at portraying how complicated we human beings are. There is plenty of tension, both the interpersonal type and physical danger. I was kept guessing throughout the entire story. Several times, I was sure I had figured out who was the murderer but I was wrong. Of course, all the clues were there, but I didn't put them together until the end. Being a writer, i also enjoyed the insight into writers and writing workshops. I've now listened to all of the Ann Cleeves novels that are available in audible form. I hope there will be more soon.

When the Mendel Gallery opens an exhibition of Sally’s work, Joanne is eager to attend and to renew their friendship. But it’s not so easy being Sally’s friend anymore, and soon Joanne finds herself ensnared in a web of intrigue and violence. When the director of a local private gallery is brutally murdered, Joanne finds that the past she and Sally share was far more complicated, and far more sordid, than she had realized.

Really?
Revisado: 04-23-18
What would have made Murder at the Mendel better?
A more believable main character. If I was a friend or family member, I'd get as far away from this woman as possible. The number of close family and friends that have been murdered already is beyond belief. She also calls others alcoholics and yet the woman has a drink for every occasion - trauma, celebration, exhaustion, grief, fear. She's clearly an alcoholic herself. Her impetuous jumping into the middle of things drove me nuts.
Would you ever listen to anything by Gail Bowen again?
Probably not, though this is my second of her novels. Who else could she kill off for the next one. Her children?
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Murder at the Mendel?
I'd take out half the murders. The bodies just pile up. It doesn't add anything to the story for me. Also the graphic eroticism does not appeal to me and seemed unnecessary to the story.
