Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

36 Long Hours
Revisado: 03-08-19
Prentice Onayemi has a beautiful voice. But, given the speed at which he talks, its sonorous qualities will put you right to sleep. I listened to the book at 1.25x speed. 1.5x is also possible but not recommended. And then there is the length of the book—a well researched and written tome. But it is that—a very long volume with (candidly) more than this reader needed to know. However, 36 hours played at 1.25x is only 29 hours.

Historia
Writing from his prison cell in Nazi Germany in 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian, sketched a vision of what he called "Religionless Christianity". In this book, John Shelby Spong puts flesh onto the bare bones of Bonhoeffer's radical thought. The result is a strikingly new and different portrait of Jesus of Nazareth, a Jesus for the non-religious.

Exciting Ideas Unedited
Revisado: 05-01-16
Bishop Spong offers really exciting ideas. He has spent years researching and developing his ideas which are well supported in this audio book. I gather from references in the book that it was developed and produced solely for an audio format. The weakness is that the book appears not to have had the benefit of a good editor. It is repetitive in a number of places and there whole sections included that appear to be superfluous to the message. Nonetheless, the book is thought provoking and well worth "reading".

Historia
Paula and John met in Italy, fell in love, and married in Rome four years later. But less than a month after the wedding, tragedy struck. They had transferred from their Italian paradise to Warsaw and, while reporting on an uprising in Romania, John was shot and nearly killed by sniper fire. Although he recovered from his physical wounds in less than a year, the process of healing had just begun. Unable to regain his equilibrium, he sank into a deep sadness that reverberated throughout their relationship.

Watered Down
Revisado: 11-17-11
Renee Raudman's performance is excellent and Paula Butturini's writing is beautiful. The question is how much do you want to know about preparing fresh baby food the Italian way.
Butturini paints a vivid picture of rich food in full color and tells a tale of such pain it is difficult to control the growing lump in your throat. Until Butturini breaks to describe food in the Italian market and you lose track of who was in what pain.
Appreciation is a matter of balance and of preference. There may be those who prefer their heartbreak in smaller doses and are not distracted by lengthy descriptive interruptions. If that is you, this is your book.
