Extraordinary Storytelling
Revisado: 04-20-25
The weaving of an excellent storyteller. This is the excellent kind of horror that manages to be brutal in its observations and still deliver a satisfying catharsis.

A fantastic premise and stunningly executed. I could not put it down. I started this at work on a Friday morning, listened on the way home, while I made dinner and did the dishes, and got up early Saturday morning to finish it!
All three narrators had incredible range

Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

Stunning.
Revisado: 04-06-25
This is the best haunted house story I have read in a decade. It is downright cathartic to see this family dynamic so exquisitely framed. The hell of the scapegoat in an emotionally abusive family, an ingeniously designed haunting, and an ending that made me cheer and sob simultaneously. What more could I ask for in a story?
And the narrator was fantastic!

Julie's only hope for rescue lies in the hands of her estranged father, Dr. Finn Maddern, a renowned mycologist.

Big ‘ol yikes. I wish I could get my credit back
Revisado: 05-30-24
The problem with this book is that the racism and rape rhetoric are not framed as horror, they are framed as the relatable tension-breaking humor. 1) So much penis humor you’d think this was erotica. 2) Assuming an Amazonian tribe hasn’t seen a black person before or would first react with “oh they rolled in poop” IS racist. Having the only white character in the scene go, “It’s not racist!” is just a white person trying to normalize racism. 3) “locker room talk” from ex military characters isn’t humor or charm or realistic, it’s rape culture. The US military has the highest occurence of occupational rape than any other job in the US. Just because you hear some soldiers compare women to objects and only speak of them in terms of how they can be used for pleasure doesn’t mean it’s normal or humor. Still rape culture. And then when the worst offender dies everyone grieves him, again citing his rape rhetoric as “amusing, but we’ll all miss him.” 4) The alien source is actually very imaginative, which makes the dialogue and exposition so much worse. The author does have an imagination and some creativity, yet chose not to apply it to 2/3 of the book. Regurgitating racisim and rape culture as if it’s normal is not critical thinking or creative writing. At least Stephen King frames his use of these things as horror.

This was incredibly validating and enlightening. It has one of the best explanations of attachment theory that I’ve ever found, and I love that Fern removed the monoist lens. This is vital info for all relationships, not just polyamorous ones

Historia
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.
