After the ending of the prior book [no spoilers here], I wasn't sure where we were headed. Well, the title was a clue, I suppose. Love it or hate it, the romance elements which were fairly prominent in the first book, are rather muted here. That doesn't bother me, as I prefer all the elements of a book to support the story, and this story grew in a direction where those romance elements weren't as necessary as they had been. Lizzie Ford's story and worldbuilding continue apace, Josie is wonderfully voiced by the incredibly talented Lillian Yves, who also masterfully manages the complex supporting cast, and things end with more questions than answers, a perfect way to set up book three,

I must confess, I listened to the this audiobook because a good friend gifted it to me, and thought I'd enjoy it. I was skeptical. After all, romance, even romance adjacent, is not my usual genre. But it was a gift, and so I thoughtit only fair to humor my friend. Turns out this book was not at all what I expected. A legit story-first kind of book, author Lizzy Ford clearly has a tale she is eager to tell, and has put in the time and the work to deliver it in ever more intriguing installments (spoiler alert I have already listened to the sequel, and I've downloaded the sequel to that, too!), something off the beaten path. I have quibbles of course but none worth raising here. Though one thing based on my own misconceptions, yes there is one of "those" scenes, but just the one. If that is your Goldilocks number then you are all set. If that is too many or too few, well I warned you ;-)

The Narrator, Lillian Yves, I gather is new to the field (or rather was at the time of this recording) as her pace is a little brisk for narration. And yet, it didn't matter. I found myself liking Josie (our lead) right away, and would have happily joined her for that beer in an early scene of the book. The narration was captivating, and I was surprised how swiftly I made my way through the book. Ms. Yves character voicings are compelling and used expertly to propel the story forward. You feel for them, empathy and sympathy drawn out of the listener in equal measure even for the apparent villains of the narrative. And, about "that" scene. This was my first experience with such material in an audiobook, and I expected it to be distracting at best, off-putting at worst, a but to be gotten through when the time came. I'll admit I was drawn in, my breath caught short in the moment. I don't know how such vignettes are generally delivered, but I imagine many could stand to steal a page or two from Ms. Yves on that front.

If you could sum up Secrets of Screen Acting in three words, what would they be?

Squarely on point.

What about David H. Lawrence XVII’s performance did you like?

Mr. Lawrence delivers the wonderful information contained here clearly, directly, and without unnecessary, self-involved flourish.

Any additional comments?

This book will change for the better your working understanding on-camera acting.
