Historia
A Bridge Too Far is Cornelius Ryan’s masterly chronicle of the Battle of Arnhem, which marshaled the greatest armada of troop-carrying aircraft ever assembled and cost the Allies nearly twice as many casualties as D-day. In this compelling work of history, Ryan narrates the Allied effort to end the war in Europe in 1944 by dropping the combined airborne forces of the American and British armies behind German lines to capture the crucial bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem. Focusing on a vast cast of characters, Ryan brings to life one of the most ill-fated operations of the war.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

So profound in every sense of the word.
Revisado: 08-28-22
This might be one of the most important works ever to come out on the marine experience of the vietnam war. Just incredible. It’s read so well too, all the way down to the drunken slurs and intonations. I was just riveted by the end. It takes you deep into the jungle and doesn’t let you out. My heart goes out to marlantes and every other marine with a similar experience in this theater, and my heart bleeds for the infighting and unnecessary deaths Americans caused one another in this war. Well done, marlantes. 30 years of work well spent.

Historia
Written by two of the world's leading authorities on the subject, Imperial Germany and War, 1871-1918 examines the most essential components of the imperial German military system, with an emphasis on such foundational areas as theory, doctrine, institutional structures, training, and the officer corps. In the period between 1871 and 1918, rapid technological development demanded considerable adaptation and change in military doctrine and planning.

This might have been my toughest military history audiobook yet. Just didn’t grab me at any point. There was a chapter on theory and doctrine in the middle of the book that was surprisingly enthralling, otherwise the book was repetitive, extremely dry, and meandering.

Historia
In a voice both haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri describes her life as a geisha. Taken from her home at the age of nine, she is sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. Witness her transformation as you enter a world where appearances are paramount, virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder, women beguile powerful men, and love is scorned as illusion.

One of the most powerful stories I have ever heard
Revisado: 03-28-21
There is a reason this is one of the top audiobooks out there. Since starting audiobooks I have restrained myself almost exclusively to military history books. When I didn’t know what other period I could possibly learn more about, I decided to try out a memoir. This book has inspired me to listen to the more intimate and personal side of literature as it can be so much more fulfilling. Amazingly captivating book from start to finish.

Historia
On 25 June, 1950, the invasion of South Korea by the Communist North launched one of the bloodiest conflicts of the last century. The seemingly limitless power of the Chinese-backed North was thrown against the ferocious firepower of the UN-backed South in a war that can be seen today as the stark prelude to Vietnam.

Like his book on vietnam, a truly gratifying, educational, introspective, and all encompassing experience
Revisado: 03-23-21
While the book is a bit dated at this point, it provides the most essential account of the Korean War. It bears some resemblances in narrative structure to Tradegy, such as focusing on the experiences of pows and the airmen by about the 2/3 or 3/4 point, which isn’t bad just something I noticed. Also like Tragedy, the last chapter is an almost awe-inspiring exercise in reflection, summary, introspection and making you feel like you understand the conflict as well as most historians. Has made me think twice about my views on Communism, and the best use of limited warfare.

Historia
Vietnam became the Western world’s most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the US in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of an epic struggle. Here are the vivid realities of strife amid jungle and paddies that killed two million people.

Quite possibly my favorite military history book yet
Revisado: 02-25-21
Max Hastings does such a good job bringing everything together and describing the conflict in such coherent, comprehensive terms with incredible attention to moral justice, hindsight, and personal experiences from all three core perspectives of the conflict. I really have rarely felt like such a book taught me so much about a war I knew a little about, but not a lot. Every American, whether they’re a Socialist or far right conservative, should read this. There is a lot to learn from it, and as Hastings says in the final lines, if we had learned from this experience, us foreign policy and the world we live in today would be much much different.

In a seamless meshing of exhaustive research, brilliant synthesis and narrative élan, Simon Sebag Montefiore chronicles the life and lives of Stalin’s court from the time of his acclamation as “leader” in 1929, five years after Lenin’s death, until his own death in 1953 at the age of 73. Through the lens of personality - Stalin’s as well as those of his most notorious henchmen, Molotov, Beria and Yezhov among them - the author sheds new light on the oligarchy that attempted to create a new world by exterminating the old.

A hard to follow account of Stalin with some periods of enthralling storytelling
Revisado: 12-22-20
This is honestly my least favorite history audiobook I have listened to yet. Most of the book is mired in Russian politics, which is fine, but with little to no illustration of most figures. Names blend together, and there are countless Russian words inserted that if you don’t know Russian or Stalinist history by heart are lost upon you. I was hoping for an enthralling and truly engaging introduction to the understanding of Stalinist Russia, and instead I got something rather dry and without much focused narrative.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, "a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened - muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox."

Wonderful, in depth, comprehensive telling of the pacific war
Revisado: 12-13-20
The beginning is a little slow and it’s hard to keep track of some of the internal politics in this part, but most of the book brims with majesty, imagery, and wonderful narration. Very comprehensive, concerning more specifically the war with America. He does skim some of the peripheral theaters of the war, like Singapore and Burma.
