Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Sandra Bland did not commit suicide
Revisado: 09-18-19
That's how I came into this book. I wanted to see how Gladwell came to this conclusion. I came into the story from the wrong angle. Gladwell opened my eyes to critically think about how I interact with people, and what I come away thinking about them. Why some people make me so mad, why I make some people so mad. I'm a mismatched person - even those who are closest to me will say. I'm recommending this book to everyone I know. It's needed now more than ever when many of us feel on the cusp of a shift in - not only the USA - but the world. How do we see each other and how do we get each other so wrong? Our interpretations of our interactions with strangers differ greatly from how they see things. Malcolm answers the why in a way that allows the reader to critically think about their own behavior. It's certainly why emojis and exclamation points are so important in our modern society. But our faces are not emojis. This book was money well spent. I could not put it down and will listen again soon.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Incredible book, easy to listen to, and one of my to 10 King novels. Satisfying ending too. Kings leaves this open for a part two of he wishes, there is so much to this story I’m so happy he’s healthy and still writing.

Historia
Critics have called her “sweet, adorable, and vicious.” But there is so much more to be said about Samantha Bee. For one, she’s Canadian - whatever that means. And now, she opens up for the very first time about her checkered Canadian past. With charming candor, she admits to her Lennie from Of Mice and Men-style love of baby animals, her teenage crime spree as one-half of a car-thieving couple, and the fact that strangers seem compelled to show her their genitals.

a book filled with all the things we are typically never honest about. i found it funny, entertaining, and I also cringed at 75% of it. Damn Samantha’s filter is broken. thanks for the honest portrayal of growing up 80s and average.

Revisado: 10-13-18
I was looking for something to lift me out of the dark mood my current audiobook has put me in. I need to learn better balance it’s true. I like Lewis Black, but never heard this rant is due stuff. wish i would have listened sooner. So, it’s free right now, that’s good, and it makes me happy. I love rants, which usually only occur in my head as i nod to people and act like i’m listening. These people are usually my kids, and they are usually fighting. Half of me listens, the other half has earbuds in and is actively avoiding reality. Thanks Lewis for making this bearable.

Historia
William Stoner is born at the end of the 19th century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar's life, far different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments.

Neoclassic
Revisado: 08-02-18
I recommend this book if you wish to read superior writing and appreciate subtlety. Stoner to me is easy to listen to and follow, while still being sweeping. No melodrama, just good drama. The author definitely didn’t phone this in, the book felt intentional, like he had a story to write and this was it.
The best part was how mundane his life was, and how his lack of subterfuge and wile contributed to decisions that were unfortunate. His is an unfortunate but ordinary life.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Outstanding family story
Revisado: 06-24-18
Besides the hilarity and hijinks, i found the human elements so relatable. At turns dark, then reflective, this book is never pretentious. The comedy seems a symptom of the telling, not the disease. That’s hard to do. It’s my first Sedaris book, and now searching for others to read.
I don’t leave many reviews, but after almost a thousand books on audible between two accounts, please read this. It’ll make you not hate your family so much.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Top 20 fiction titles on audible
Revisado: 05-05-18
I’ve skipped over this book for a year or more. It looked maudlin, and a little “Lifetime Channel” for my tastes. I broke down and downloaded it. prepared to abandon it in the first chapter. I couldn’t put it down. After listening to audiobooks since 99, and listening to thousands of books, this is a top 20 fiction. I don’t like to leave reviews...and i typically don’t let them stop me from buying a book. I hope my review encourages someone to give this one a shot.
The narrator...this voice could not have been a better fit, for the setting and the language. Sure it’s translated in English, but this narrator gets the feel of the sentence structure, which you can glean is Swedish. The narrator does women very well, none of that high pitched crap you hear narrators trying to do - just a gentle shift that lets me know, a woman is talking. The sound quality was high, and there were no annoying dry or wet mouth sounds that KILL an audiobook.
The story is a happy one. Just not in the way you would expect. There are no twists. This gem needs no tricks. I’m glad I met you Ove, say hi to Sonia.

Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Thandie oh thandie
Revisado: 08-10-17
what a blissful narration. thandie Newton brought this book to life, with perfect character development, and feeling. Her interpretation of scenes was appropriate and thoughtful. I felt like she really understood how people acted in the period, and she was never wooden, never annoying. She gave just the right touch to Jane. Her voices for Yorkshire accents were epic. Her narration never distracted from. the story which was important to me, it just emerses you deeper into the plot.

Each story was wonderful. Kathy, Matthew, Tim Curry, & SK did great with their narrations but the others failed to command attention. Boring voices maybe? Overall this audiobook was worth listening to and wonderful.

I remembered the last words of The Talisman as I listened to this story. It was lovely to hear of Jack's adult life. This story was pretty much as good as The Talisman. It's hard to follow that act but, this book held up well.
