Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Engaging from Beginning to End
Revisado: 08-02-17
I wasn't sure exactly what I would get with this book, but I'd heard it recommended enough to catch my attention and the description seemed interesting.
It wasn't quite what I had been expecting, but I was drawn in pretty quickly and even when things went in different directions than I expected I was not than willing to go along for the ride.
Ray Porter is an outstanding narrator, and his performance added a great deal to my immersion.
Highly recommended for anyone who finds the descriptive blurb interesting.

A Great Introduction
Revisado: 06-30-17
I'd never heard of the 'cozy mystery' genre before this book, and with how much I enjoyed it I've found a new genre to dive into.
The narration is outstanding, and really immersed me in the story. The writing flowed nicely, and I adore both Flo and Lady Hardcastle.
I'm not very familiar with mysteries so I didn't guess the culprit, but it made sense to me when they were revealed. I'm definitely looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.

Nearly everyone swears - whether it's over a few too many drinks, in reaction to a stubbed toe, or in flagrante delicto. And yet we sit idly by as words are banned from television and censored in books. We insist that people excise profanity from their vocabularies, and we punish children for yelling the very same dirty words that we'll mutter in relief seconds after they fall asleep. Swearing, it seems, is an intimate part of us that we have decided to selectively deny.

Highly Recommended for Word Nerds
Revisado: 04-20-17
I've had a long-time interest in language/linguistics, and when this book came up as a daily deal I couldn't pass it up.
It's entertaining, yes, but there's a lot of fascinating information to be found as well. From how profanity can have measurable physiological effects, to how it can perform differently grammatically to regular words, and many more interesting discoveries.
It is hard to hear casually-spoken slurs, but if you can get past the visceral reaction there really is a lot to learn from this book and I would highly recommend it.

Historia
The Emperor of All Maladies reveals the many faces of an iconic, shape-shifting disease that is the defining plague of our generation. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance but also of hubris, arrogance, paternalism, and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer".

A Gripping Story
Revisado: 02-10-17
First of all, I want to give praise to the narrator. Outstanding work was done by Imogen Church.
As to the book itself, it wasn't exactly what I thought it would be, but I don't say that negatively. I expected something more generic than what I got. I wound up caught up in the stories of the residents, hoping for success and safety for several of them. They didn't just feel like set pieces.
I was caught off guard more than once by things that happened, and there were moments where the narrator's calm voice contrasted so strongly with the content that it seemed to make the horror of it stand out all the more.
Overall, I was very impressed and am interested to look into other works by both the author and narrator.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.

A new American cuisine is forming. Animals never before considered or long since forgotten are emerging as delicacies. Parts that used to be for scrap are centerpieces. Ash and hay are fashionable ingredients, and you pay handsomely to breathe flavored air. Going out to a nice dinner now often precipitates a confrontation with a fundamental question: Is that food?

Engrossing As Always
Revisado: 12-10-16
I've been a fan of Mary Roach for years, and was excited when I learned of Grunt. The military isn't particularly an interest of mine, but I knew I'd enjoy this book nonetheless and I did. I was perhaps less engrossed by certain chapters, but her writing style keeps things engaging.
There has been a lot said about the narrator, but I had no problem with her performance. There were a few mispronounced words, however, which was a bit distracting.
