abuse is always hard to listen to
Revisado: 09-21-23
I struggled to finish this book, when reading the synopsis of the book I assume that this family was going to have some sort of encounter with a wild animal in Alaska and try to figure their way out... turns out the animal was the husband. it's never easy to listen to descriptive abuse. everything at the end of the book was wrapped up in a neat tidy bow, happily ever after. I don't think that I would recommend this book without disclosure of what it is about.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

exceptional reading by Polly Stone
Revisado: 09-14-23
Holly Stone was able to captivate my interest to no end. she constantly changed her voice and accent in order to make the story so very real. The story of two sisters during world war II and how they helped the French resistance and lives of Jewish children.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

slow start, unusually good
Revisado: 04-27-23
I always enjoy books that go through decades of time as you follow the character and his life. I'm never a fan of the authors reading their own books because they have a tendency to stumble over words because they know the story only too well in their head. The story follows a boy whose irises have no color therefore the red retina reflects causing a red eye syndrome. He deals with this abnormality through his life and then later accepts the color of his eyes with the help of 2 dear friends that stay with him through adulthood. It was interesting to hear in the end how the story was inspired by both his family and in a newspaper article.

Historia
Lina Meisel, a retired librarian in Florida, is reading the newspaper one morning when she freezes. Her eyes lock on a photograph of a book she hasn’t seen in 65 years - a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II - an experience Lina remembers well - and the search to reunite people with the texts stolen from them so long ago. The book in the photograph is one of the most fascinating cases.

one of the best books I have read in a long time.

listening to the story of a woman who became an accidental underground freedom fighter in France and a love story that came out of it accomplish both intrigue and romance. Definitely a good read.

Good story but author needs to let a professional
Revisado: 03-27-20
The author needs to let go of controlling all aspects of the book. I understand it's her baby and it can be hard to let go but I found that she tripped over her words too often...maybe she knew the story too well and anticipated the next word causing her to stumble. I enjoy flawless readings, truthfully I had to listen to the book twice because I was listening for the next mistake rather than enjoying the story.
I did enjoy the story though. Listening to how God works even when we try to control the outcome of our good intentions.

2 Drunk men arguing. Not entertainment to me.

I expected more from Sam Shepherd. There's nothing worse than listening to 2 Drunk men arguing and fighting. I do not recommend this book. Just awful.

I struggled to finish this book. my abandonment was a much better book and I thought that this might be as interesting however it seemed to parallel my abandonment in several ways. This book was about strange cult-like living. I did not understand it and I did not like it.
