Michael Havel was flying over Idaho en route to the holiday home of his passengers when the plane's engines inexplicably died, forcing a less than perfect landing in the wilderness. And, as Michael leads his charges to safety, he begins to realize that the engine failure was not an isolated incident.

Historia
In Under the Yoke, S.M. Stirling traces the rise of the Domination of the Draka and its long struggle with the United States and the American-led Alliance for Democracy. In this alternate history, the Americans who reject the Revolution did not scatter to the four winds and Canada; a slight change in the course of events brought them to the new Crown Colony of Drakia instead - starting with the Cape of Good Hope and soon encompassing the whole of the right subcontinent of Southern Africa.

Brutal and brilliant
Revisado: 02-07-23
A visceral tale of power and absolute control butting up against the human spirit. I will definitely be reading the third book.

Correlation does not equal causation.
Revisado: 04-03-17
The author uses a lot of data to "back up" his claims, but nuanced causation isn't there. Even in his display of the facts the broad approach can reach many conclusions. The author seems to lump the transgressions of a socio-economic class onto a generation of people due to his own inclusion in the class. I hoped for an in depth argument to a generational collusion, but instead got a ton of data with a thin analysis.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

And the point is?
Revisado: 12-28-16
If you grew up in Ohio in a lower middle class family but found a way into an Ivy League school then this book is for you. If not, good luck trying find meaning in this coyly narcissistic rendering of a rags to riches story. It hops around without fully fleshing out any idea.

This has to be one of the best 1st person accounts of West African conflict. Once you start this story, you can only see it to the end. Good luck!

Historia
"The war tried to kill us in the spring," begins this breathtaking account of friendship and loss. In Al Tafar, Iraq, 21-year-old Private Bartle and 18-year-old Private Murphy cling to life as their platoon launches a bloody battle for the city. In the endless days that follow, the two young soldiers do everything to protect each other from the forces that press in on every side: the insurgents, physical fatigue, and the mental stress that comes from constant danger. Bound together since basic training when their tough-as-nails sergeant ordered Bartle to watch over Murphy, the two have been dropped into a war neither is prepared for.

Good Story
Revisado: 01-22-15
It is a very sentimental story of the Iraq war. However, it lacks some authenticity that only comes with actually experiencing the war first hand. It's a good story but some of the fine details feel very "Hollywood". I guess I am just being overly critical.
