Historia
Every family has its secrets. Josephina “Joey” Harris wouldn’t mind if her family still had a few of their own after a lawsuit tarnishes their name. When an opportunity opens to become a temporary keeper of a decommissioned lighthouse on a North Carolina island, she takes the opportunity to escape the scrutiny of her small town to oversee its restoration.

Written and performed like a bad Hallmark movie.
Revisado: 12-11-24
The book read like 9th grade English class writing assignment, with repetitive phrases (ducking of heads and biting of lower lips) in every chapter. The deep dark family secret was neither. And the weird theological shift near the end was strange. The book and narration just fell flat for me.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Beautiful Saga
Revisado: 08-28-24
This was a beautifully written story, perfectly narrated by the author. I avoided reading this for a year because I have no connection to or knowledge of India. But the author's poetic narration brought everything and every character to life. I loved how he wove so many characters lives together in such a believable way. This is by far one of the best fictions I have read (listened to) in quite some time and I was sorry when it ended.

I look forward to the Heathcliff Lennox books to keep me entertained while driving. But this one was boring and predictable. I figured out the killer pretty quickly. Fun narration as always.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Slow start
Revisado: 11-02-23
I had trouble getting into the story at first, However, the more I listened the more I enjoyed it. But the narration! Jack LaLann? So many words were mispronounced but that one especially drove me nuts. I think Mad should have been a few years older to be believable, but overall I think the author did a great job with the characters, even the nasty ones.

She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

Historia
The year 1865. Goldie O’Neill was nine years of age when she trekked across the unclaimed American West with her family to form their own Irish Catholic colony. Their new community had dreams of self-governance and prosperity far removed from the anti-Irish sentiment and prejudice of the ruling classes. They soon learned about the extremes of the American West and the ongoing Indian war. A year after their arrival, Goldie blames herself for her sister’s disappearance.

Couldn't finish on Audible
Revisado: 07-12-23
This was a very interesting story. I had trouble keeping all the characters straight, but overall I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I had to quit listening after getting a third of the way through. The narrator ended every sentence in that weird "Vocal Fry" gravelly voice that I hear so much now (except when she was using her Irish brogue). Knowing that croak was coming up every few seconds ruined it for me. I've had to return the last 2 books, and I couldn't in all good conscience do it again. So I downloaded it onto my Kindle and enjoyed reading the rest of the story.

Historia
On the brink of a life-changing decision, Alexis Fielding plans a trip to her mother's childhood home in Plaka, Greece hoping to unravel Sofia's hidden past. Given a letter to take to Sofia's old friend, Fotini, Alexis is promised that through Fotini, she will learn more. Arriving in Plaka, Alexis is astonished to see that it lies a stone's throw from the deserted island of Spinalonga—Greece's former leper colony. Fotini reveals the story that Sofia has buried all her life: the tale of her great-grandmother Eleni and her daughters, and a family rent by tragedy, war, and passion.

Interesting topic
Revisado: 04-14-23
Interesting topic and I enjoyed the main story. The characters were developed well. The side story of Alexis could have been left out and it would have been just as good. I'm not sure why the narrator felt the need to whisper the whole story. I was about nuts listening to her by the end of the book. I would recommend the book.

I was in between credits and got it as a book included with membership so I would have something to listen to while driving. It was slow at first, but the story did pick up and drew me in. I found the narration very easy to listen to, and could picture the settings and characters easily as well.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.
