Historia
If everyone is looking to secure a relationship with their perceived best option, then the perception of value must be at the heart of human coupling. In this groundbreaking work, psychologist Orion Taraban sets forth his economic model of relationships and exposes the often uncomfortable laws that govern the sexual marketplace. After listening to "The Value of Others," you'll never look at relationships the same way again.

"a" Economic model of Relationships, not "the"
Revisado: 12-31-24
Dr Taraban's book is an insightful attempt of uniting social psychology with basic economic principles and some evolutionary theory to understand how human relationships work. What the author offers is a "no bullshit" approach to how most men and most women handle relationships, why they succeed and why they fail. There are many valuable pieces of wisdom in this book that could help many people that are suffering due to plain ignorance or most likely misguided by false hopes, false advertising, and delusional thinking promoted by common romance archetypes.
That said, as an academic that holds a PhD in economics, my appreciation for this book would be greatly improved if Dr Taraban was more straightforward with his readers regarding how innovative his approach is. Perhaps surprisingly to laypeople, very little scientific work has been written on the economics of human relationships. This fact shows in Dr Taraban list of references, that for the economics side is mostly basic texts on principles of economics, while more scientific sources come from psychology, anthropology, or biology.
So what Dr Taraban is actually doing is rough sketch of how an economic model of relationships could look like, what variables are relevant, how supply and demand meet, etc. It is "a" possible model for the economics of relationships, but it is too innovative to claim it is "the" economic model of relationships. I hope Dr Taraban considers this book a work in progress, and further editions and revisions down the line will maybe mature it to the point of de facto attempting to publish a proper scientific paper defending the core elements of his model idea. That said, as it is right now, I believe readers and listeners to this book should be made aware this book should not be taken as a high credibility, high evidence-based approach to relationships. It is too novel for its own sake and carries with it all the risks of innovative approaches, including a higher risk of being wrong or missing key underlying mechanisms. My advice is to take it what wisdom you can learn from it, but do overly trust on its truth more than you would any advice based on anecdotal evidence, even from people with lots of anecdotal evidence like most clinical psychologists.
For more comprehensive evidence-based approaches, readers should check out the works of The Gottman Institute and The Harvard Study of Adult Development.

Historia
Getting your employees to do their best work has never been easy. But it is a particular challenge for knowledge workers, who must attend to many different tasks and whose to-do list is often ambiguous, requiring outside-the-box thinking. Lists of dos and don'ts are rarely effective. Instead, your best bet is to align their interests with your own - the heart of motivation - and set them free to use their own drive and creativity on their, and your, behalf.

Historia
"While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition." Excellent
Revisado: 05-10-23
Ryan is a passionate yet clear writer, a rare combination. He is also profoundly moved by the principles and ideas of stoicism and it just shows naturally in his writing, pacing and organization. A great book to listen too and one I am sure I will be listening again in times of both difficulty and especially after successes.

On his 68th birthday, Kevin Kelly began to write down for his young adult children some things he had learned about life that he wished he had known earlier. To his surprise, Kelly had more to say than he thought, and kept adding to the advice over the years, compiling a life’s wisdom into this book. Kelly’s timeless advice covers an astonishing range, from right living to setting ambitious goals, optimizing generosity, and cultivating compassion. Do not buy
Revisado: 05-02-23
The book is just an endless sequence of short phrases. The author did not even bother to organize them by theme, so even the ones that could have sounded more profound end up lost in a chaotic string of unrelated ideas. Maybe the book can have some use, like opening in a random page to see what you get. But the audiobook is totally useless, the phrases were not meant to be read in a sequence and there is no context or story to soften it. Imho this is a book that should not even be available in audio format. I wasted an audible credit on this and I feel like I was scammed. Just terrible.
