monotonic voice. humor falls flat

Everything is presented in a hohum manner. It sounds barely better than a robo voice.

I suspect the story is pretty good. Very Russian. To bad the narration ruins it.

it might be a decent story but the narration kills it

the narrator has a lovely accent but imo she can't act to save her life. she presents with a perpetually flat inflection and she sounds like she's shouting at you the entire time.

I purchased this set from Amazon but I think the reviews posted are for the books and not the audible.

the books may be better, but I'm 10 chapters in and the Supernatural Uber-Assassin Mage is still completely inept. seriously - she let's herself get roofied at a rowdy orc gang bar. and it turns out all you need to do to disrupt her magic is punch her in the face. she's failed her primary mission and got kidnapped. twice. and that's just in the first 10 chapters. is she some kind of idiot?

it's hard to listen to a stupid mc

it would be more believable is she were a valley girl and just deliberately "ditzifying" herself. I have to decide whether it's even with it to finish the last hour and a half of this book. The mc has no redeeming quantities other than she's "nice". That might not be so bad in an actual person, but it's not something I want to read about.

Did I buy this or get it as a prime freebie? Either way - can somebody refund me my time?

I hate to leave a bad review for a Glynn Stewart book. I have read/listened to almost all of their books available on audible. He is a wonderful writer... so I don't know what happened here.

There is zero character development. There's no reason to relate to any of the characters. None of the characters change. The scenes feel unconnected. There is almost zero tie-in to the previous books. It's a hot mess.

The book is mostly a bunch of empty battles; not what I expect from a Glynn Stewart novel.

constant barrage of abuse and chauvinism

Terrible storyline. I can't get through it. It's yet another unrealistic story with a weak, ineffectual, vapid, overly sexualized female protagonist surrounded by abusive men.

It's unbelievable that stories like this stand in this day and age.

As a side issue, the female narrator can't drop a realistic f-bomb. Every time she tries, it's with a dramatic pause - like she had to labor to finally squeeze out a burst of flatulence.

Terrible post-production on the audio. Needs to learn how to use a compressor. The male voices are often barely audible. The narration is completely devoid of emotion. So-so storyline punctuated by moments of sex. Simplistic and too matter-of-fact storytelling.

I'm losing all respect for Kyle Rigs

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Kyle Rigs is seriously starting to tick me off. I understand wanting to make a "human" character with "human" flaws, but this is getting ridiculous. His love triangle is getting old. His lying, cheating and manipulation of allies is getting old. His increasing lack of ethics is getting old. His lack of any strategic planning and awareness is getting old. The only thing not getting old is his attitude - it's becoming more and more juvenile.

Do you think Empire needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Absolutely - this is an epic story - I just hope that in the future, we witness a return of a Kyle Rigs that we can once again respect.

Mark Boyett continues to do an excellent job with the narration. I would just suggest that he maintain a set distance from the mic (unless going for effect).
