Great plot - really interesting book
Revisado: 07-20-11
This was my first John Lescroart book but it won't be my last! He develops interesting plotlines and characters and the book describes San Franscisco beautifully. It is a long book, but it kept my attention all the way through. I thought the narrator was excellent.

Historia
Annie's put fifteen years into safe, slightly obsessive Duncan, and now she'd like her money back, please. It's time to move on. But she lives in Gooleness, the north's answer to a question nobody asked. Is she really going to find real, proper, fell-it-deep-down-in-your-boots love on a damp and windy seafront? Or perhaps she should follow her heart and pursue Tucker, the reclusive American rock star, who keeps emailing her his smart advice. But between Annie and her second chance lie a few obstacles.

Beautiful book
Revisado: 04-30-11
Hornby is a first-class writer and this book didn't disappoint. It was sweet and wry and full of lots of humor - a lot of it based on UK/US differences. Some other reviewers said they thought the book lost its way a little when Tucker appeared, but I thought it continued to be interesting as it explored his life. I laughed out loud a couple of time and have listened to the book twice. Love it!

Lots of insight
Revisado: 04-30-11
I really enjoyed this book. It's not an action thriller but has plenty of intrigue and cerebral action. The book gave me a lot of insight into the workings of US intelligence, and there were some caper-style laughs towards the end of the book. All in all - a very entertaining read.

But when a terrible accident takes the life of one son, their lives begin to fall apart. This is the story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances - and the lengths they will go to put their lives together again.

A beautiful book
Revisado: 03-22-11
I saw the movie 'Ordinary People' and thought I'd like to listen to the book it is based on. This is a beautiful book - very moving and sensitive and also really interesting and character driven. Although it is set in the late 60's the book hasn't dated much at all, it still has a very contemporary feel. The narrator is excellent. A great listen!

This book didn't blow my mind, but it was interesting and I'd read more by the same author. The characters were well drawn out, and the book had a good pace to it.

Excellent - tightly written, original
Revisado: 02-01-11
This book was a real treat - I'd never heard of Keith McCarthy before but I'll be getting more of his books after reading this one.
I was drawn into the plot from the first few chapters. There's a bit of gore (a nasty murder) but overall the book isn't too gory or filled with gratuitous violence. The lives of all the characters are well fleshed out and quite complex and the plot remains interesting throughout the book.
I think if you like Ruth Rendell or PD James' books you'd like this.

OK - but really for fans of Val's.
Revisado: 02-01-11
I thought this was OK - it was a standard whodunnit with some fairly cluncky dialogue and not so orginal plot twists.
It's amazing how much more complex and psychologically interesting Val's later works are. I'd read this only if you are a fan of hers and wanted to see how the series began.

Historia
July 2005, and the G8 leaders have gathered in Scotland. With daily marches, demonstrations, and scuffles, the police are at full stretch. Detective Inspector John Rebus, however, has been sidelined, until the apparent suicide of an MP coincides with clues that a serial killer may be on the loose. The authorities are keen to hush up both, for fear of overshadowing a meeting of global importance. But Rebus has never been one to stick to the rules.

Complex, topical, riveting, and psychologically sophisticated - I think this is Rankin's best yet. I was thoroughly impressed by this novel. As soon as I finished listening to it I started it all over again. What a wonderful writer!
