All Americans should know this story, which is compellingly told and wonderfully brief! And gives a good rendering of how the military slowly overcame the paralysis and futility of trench warfare a century ago. But, in its telling and content, it is a bit understated, which may be very Canadian , but in the case of the story's subject, may make the listener wish for more.

This was a much better book than Devil in the White City, because it provided a picture of life, real-time, in early Nazi Germany. Very hard to imagine it, without being overwhelmed by hindsight. Like White City, the book cannot carry its great set-up to the end, but the early parts, as the family discover what is actually happening in front of them, is very persuasive. And much more relevant than a fascinating account of the Chicago world's fair and an ancient 19th century crime.

From an old friend thought gone forever

Oh! One last taste of the genius of O'Brian. I had thought his last books showed him slowing down, losing interest, aging perhaps. But here, in his just-begun No 21, he's at full powers, backed by the great Patrick Tull. You know when you put it down that his O'Brian's fertile mind had seamlessly contrived to get Jack and Stephen to meet the monster of the age...Napoleon. Shows a major novelist going out on top.

A Perfect Marriage

As another reviewer said, these stories are gems, pearls; rich, sweet delights, to be savored, and listened to over and over. Writing short stories well requires different skills than novels, and Maugham has them all. It is his skill as a writer of short stories that makes the context, however politically incorrect it might seem today, unimportant to the enjoyment of the stories,

Combined with the melifluous and perfectly appropriate world-weary voice of the narrator, this production is as good as audio literature gets. I can't wait to read the later volumes.
