Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

A must read
Revisado: 02-22-23
I have read many books about Lincoln and the civil war. Unsurprisingly Meacham’s book is the best and having him read it only adds to the experience. Given the racism rampant in the north and the south it is obvious the war was not fought to free the slaves but to preserve the union and punish the rebel south for having the audacity to secede from the union. The byproduct of the war reversed the great evil of slavery which eventually would have had to be abolished by any civilized society. The history of racism that allowed slavery must be learned if we are to address our ongoing divisiveness. This should not be trivially termed “woke” but rather education because knowledge remains the only way forward to solve our societal problems.

Historia
In the days and months after Pearl Harbor, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Kats Miho, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil.

Another in a series of stories about the price of racism in the history of mankind.. It is a informative and well written documentation of the mistreatment of Japanese Americans in the time leading up to WWII.and beyond
I grew up in the post war generation and was never taught about this aspect of history. It serves to underscore the need for teaching the population true history so that we stop making the same mistakes.
Since we didn’t incarcerate Muslims after 9/11 I guess we are making some progress after all.
Great book!

After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and to everyone’s surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state. There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. But it’s a canny move on the part of the president. With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate

Predictable but well crafted.
Revisado: 02-18-22
Most of political intrigue books and movies by their nature are formulaic . This one is well crafted, exciting and comes uncomfortably close to reality. I predict 70% of readers will like it and 30% won’t. Nevertheless I enjoyed it.

Historia
It was more than an incident: It was a deadly assault across the 38th parallel. It was the Korean War. In the fear and the frenzy of battle, those who had served with heroism before were called again by America to man the trenches and sandbag bunkers. From Pusan to the Yalu, they drove forward with commands too new and tanks too old, brothers in war, bonded together in battle as they had never been in peace....

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-29-22
I love military history and novels about military history. Because the subject deals with men I admire for their dedication and professionalism it is not necessary to add machismo and chest thumping to the story. This story details the sexual behavior of the characters as a callow adolescent boy would and although I doubt the author is racist he includes a lot of racial and ethnic slurs I found it , like the sexual passages, gratuitous and detracting from the story. I doubt I will read the rest of the series. I am not prudish, but am easily bored by anything that detracts from the story.

Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

Well worth listening to
Revisado: 01-12-22
I learned a great deal about the settling of the west. Anyone who has questions about the importance of Critical Race theory should read this book as it pertains to the treatment of the Indians. This should not make one feel ashamed of what our white ancestors did, for all of mankind treated their fellowman unfairly at one time or another in the course of history but it allows the reader to understand how we got to where we are and perhaps try hard not to repeat our mistakes and therefore perpetuate the ills of society. Knowledge gives us the power to adapt.

Historia
Farming has been in John Connell's family for generations, but he never intended to follow in his father's footsteps. Until, one winter, after more than a decade away, he finds himself back on the farm. Connell records the hypnotic rhythm of the farming day - cleaning the barns, caring for the herd, tending to sickly lambs, helping the cows give birth. Alongside the routine events, there are the unforeseen moments when things go wrong: when a calf fails to thrive, when a sheep goes missing, when an argument between father and son erupts and things are said that cannot be unsaid.

I enjoyed learning of Irish farm experience as it is today as the old transitions onto the modern era. The characters are interesting and I loved the readers brogue. It’s not Herriot but still worth reading.

Historia
When Wynn and Jack decide to canoe the Maskwa River in Northern Canada, they anticipate long days of leisurely paddling and picking blueberries and nights of stargazing and reading paperback Westerns. But a wildfire making its way across the forest adds unexpected urgency to the journey. When they hear a man and woman arguing on the fog-shrouded riverbank and decide to warn them about the fire, their search for the pair turns up nothing and no one. But: The next day, a man appears on the river, paddling alone. Is this the man they heard? And, if he is, where is the woman?

Historia
Daniel Graham MacCormick - Mac for short - seems to have a pretty good life. At age 35 he's living in Key West, owner of a 42-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the army as an infantry officer, with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don't tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac's finances are more than a little shaky. One day Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West, contemplating his life....

Bee lost his father as a young boy and keenly felt his orphanhood. He would wander from one neighbor to the next, collecting the things they said to each other, whispering the words to himself at night until one day a song was born. Bee sings the life of his people through the war-torn jungle and a Thai refugee camp. But the songs fall away in the cold, bitter world of a Minneapolis housing project and on the factory floor until, with the death of Bee's mother, the songs leave him for good.

The narrator, the author, was so terrible I found it difficult to concentrate on the story
After 4 chapters I had to quit !
She sounded like a bored teenager who was forced into reading the book.
Did anyone listen to this before inflicting it on faithful customers ?
I'd like my money back. I have bought dozens of books from Audible and this is the first complaint I have ever made
