A fun romp
Revisado: 03-26-25
Wait, can you call it a romp if it's ten books long? These adventures entertained me well. Most of the books can stand on their own, so there's quite a bit of exposition. However, the writing style is wonderful throughout, so the exposition isn't too bothersome. It also gives you the opportunity to put the story down for a while and pick it up again later. The pace is pretty slow up until the last book or two, but even the incidental scenes are worthwhile. The author gives us some things to think about along the way. The narrator moves skillfully among the different voices, even when there's a large gathering. She has a wonderful voice and a warm tone. I would have chosen a different voice for Luce. In fact, I actually made up a backstory for Luce for myself so I could focus less on her sound. Aside from that, the narration was engaging. The Australian terms the author uses are cute to my American ears. The one thing I would change about the writing is the incorrect use of pronoun cases. Except for the possessive case, the other two cases are used incorrectly maybe 90% of the time, sometimes in astonishing ways! I don't know if that's an attempt to be edgy, youthful, or informal, but it did not work for me. All in all, I told myself to get over it, and I enjoyed this experience.

Historia
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

Superbly written and acted. Fantastic! I love how a character from an older generation states outrageous beliefs as if they're unassailable principles. Funny and enlightening at the same time.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

I love the author's style. I haven't enjoyed a book so much since Anxious People. The performance had some extra depth that perfectly captures emotions. Ten stars all around.

Compelling premise, skillful narration
Revisado: 10-04-24
I was reading this as an ebook, but I wanted to take in as much of it as quickly as possible, so I got the audiobook. This material is coming at exactly the right time for me. It's accessible, well-organized, and persuasive. I wasn't sure whether I wanted a book performed by the author, but Brooks is a wonderful narrator. Ten stars.

In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Hard to listen to
Revisado: 08-29-24
It was often difficult to understand the dialog. There were a lot of scenes in rooms with water dripping, echoes, voices speaking over music, talking above crowd chatter, etc. I also had trouble knowing where we were and who the characters were in some of the scenes because the action switches among locations frequently. I don't think I completely followed the plot, but the conclusion was still enjoyable, so there's that, anyway. I recommend keeping a very careful log of all the characters' names in the hopes of understanding more than I did. This kind of complex plot would work better on film so the characters and settings have more means of identification.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Very relevant today
Revisado: 07-28-24
This work makes climate change, late stage capitalism, and refugee migration personal and vivid. Butler's engaging and artful writing would have been much easier to listen to if the main character hadn't been so interested in religion/philosophy. I had to put this down a couple of times because I got tired of that. But overall, the messages in this book are still haunting.

In listening to the wonderful author's note, I learned more about the background and history for this story. But this is a good story in itself, full of well-developed characters and thoughtful plots. I'm hoping for a sequel.

Nice young adult story
Revisado: 07-22-24
This engaging coming of age story centers on family and friendships as well as romance. I enjoyed picturing the tableaus of date disasters and a busy extended family. I would have preferred the addition of a little bit about college majors and career ideas with this age group since college choice was woven into the story.

Wonderful guide to a more holistic approach to life
Revisado: 07-07-24
This book brings together a lot of the concepts about appropriate boundaries and self-compassion that are important to keeping work and "productivity" in perspective across many aspects of our lives. It offers potential solutions and questions we can ask ourselves, rather than only describing the problem. I found several tips that will help me right away, and I'm feeling less anxious and more optimistic about my life after listening to this book. It's also well paced, with thought-provoking anecdotes.

Historia
Eve Hatch lives for surprises! Just kidding. She expects every tomorrow to be pretty much the same as today. She loves her cozy apartment in Brooklyn that’s close to her childhood best friend Willa, and far from her midwestern, traditional family who has never really understood her. While her job is only dream-adjacent, it’s comfortable and steady. She always knows what to expect from her life . . . until she finds herself expecting after an uncharacteristic one-night stand.

incredible performance
Revisado: 06-05-24
The narrator is delightful. She performs a wide range of emotions, and she has perfect timing and voicing of the humor. The asides are wonderful. The story immersed me in the protagonist's experience. It was engaging, and it also helped me understand my friends better.
