Historia
Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights is a genre-defying collection of essays that record the small joys that occurred in one year, from birthday to birthday, and that we often overlook in our busy lives. His is a meditation on delight that takes a clear-eyed view of the complexities, even the terrors, in his life, including living in America as a Black man; the ecological and psychic violence of our consumer culture; the loss of those he loves.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

disappointing
Revisado: 05-16-24
the presentation was not good. sometimes muffled. sometimes it sounded like reader was shouting. sometimes phrases were repeated. needed a better editor or sound engineer. the text itself was okay. but for me waaay to much detail on intricacies of FBI and communists, etc. disappointing.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

I was on the the edge of my seat with this story. King does a great job of weaving prior fairy tales into a compelling tale that highlights a young person's journey into adulthood. Thanks, Stephen!

Historia
This superbly told story brings to life one of the most remarkable rulers––and men––in all of history and conveys the drama of his life and world. The Russia of Peter's birth was very different from the Russia his energy, genius, and ruthlessness shaped. Crowned co-Tsar as a child of ten, after witnessing bloody uprisings in the streets of Moscow, he would grow up propelled by an unquenchable curiosity, everywhere looking, asking, tinkering, and learning, fired by Western ideas.

repetitious focus on language
Revisado: 05-02-23
I love history and historical books and have read hundreds of them. This book disappointed me immensely. It was a repetitious accounting of the word Scythian with an over-focus on language.

Historia
The holidays are upon us, and this year Audible is very happy to present to our members one of Charles Dickens’ most popular Christmas stories, The Cricket on the Hearth. This holiday classic (original subtitle: “A Fairy Tale of Home”) tells the innocent, picturesque, and charming story of a poor family and their would-be guardian angel; in short, a delightful vision of Victorian Christmas. As always, a great story calls for a great voice, so we’ve brought in legendary actor and record-breaking Audie and Grammy award-winning narrator Jim Dale (The Night Circus). Happy holidays and happy listening!

great story
Revisado: 12-30-13
Where does The Cricket on the Hearth rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
A delightful story with a typical Dickens' twist. Dickens presents a good cast of characters who offer a tale of hope and perseverance.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I especially liked the steady carrier.
Any additional comments?
I commend this book to those who could use a bit of 19th century hope.

Master of the Senate, told with an abundance of rich detail that could only have come from Caro’s peerless research, is both a galvanizing portrait of the man himself—the titan of Capital Hill, volcanic, mesmerizing—and a definitive and revelatory study of the workings and personal and legislative power.

great but repeats
Revisado: 11-18-13
Any additional comments?
This is a great book, with rich historical detail. I love how Caro sets the right context by offering numerous historical sketches in which to set the moments of Johnson's life. Gardner's reading is superb, warmly bringing the subject to life. However, this wonderful book and presentation are marred by the audio recording in which, on a regular basis (sometimes once a chapter), sentences are repeated. Overall, an excellent product!

Historia
Updike's extraordinarily evocative stories depict the generation born in a small-town America during the Depression and growing up in a world where the old sexual morality was turned around and material comforts were easily had. Yet, as these stories reflect so accurately, life was still unsettling, and Updike chronicles telling moments both joyful and painful. The texts are taken from his recent omnibus, The Early Stories, 1953-1975.

Not good story
Revisado: 10-08-11
Though I liked Herrman's reading (as I always do), the story left much to be desired. It seemingly had no point other than a vacuous notion of one of the disappointments of youth.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Excellent!
Revisado: 10-08-11
An excellent story! Engaging. Martin offers a stimulating method of narrative--having us see the events unfold through the eyes of the different characters. The reading is very good; however, it seemed as if the reader, at first, was out of breath often. This got better as the reading progressed.
