Historia
This great time capsule of a book captures the abundant popular history of the United States from 1932 to 1972. It encompasses politics, military history, economics, the lively arts, science, fashion, fads, social change, sexual mores, communications, graffiti...everything and anything indigenous that can be captured in print.

So much to learn from
Revisado: 08-11-24
The hindsight and present sight are both present in large amounts. So many small stories blend together to show the many "fragments of reality" that comprise the American experience. A beautiful book.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Incredible research, a lot of asides
Revisado: 05-15-24
I read this book in high school and decided it was worth a reread. There's A LOT in here to justify why it is an incredible read in American history. However, it should be titled "One Summer in New York and Elsewhere" with it's high emphasis on the happenings in NYC.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-22-23
Much like a Roman Reigns match, this book promised much and failed to deliver on most counts. The narrator frequently mispronounced wrestling names (including the unforgivable "N woah" instead of "N.W.O") and came off as a high and mighty absolute authority on right and wrong. The story itself is a bland narration of pre-monopoly wrestling interwoven with select instances of wrongdoing to prove a point. While the stories of Vince McMahon's wrongdoing are necessary and should be told, the story loses its authority by framing his conceit as the reason America fell apart. A few interesting nuggets of worthwhile information are all that separates this rating from a 1-star.

The inside story of the rise, fall, and rise of FanDuel and DraftKings - two companies that began as obscure startups and, seemingly overnight, became billion dollar companies, and just as quickly found themselves the target of the FBI and Department of Justice and the center of a national scandal.

Good story, average narrator
Revisado: 12-31-21
I enjoyed the book in total, but had to lower the narration speed because the narrator was too fast. He mispronounced a few things, and the story assumed too much knowledge of each reader.

Historia
On April 18, 1981, a ball game sprang eternal. What began as a modestly attended minor-league game between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings became not only the longest ever played in baseball history, but something else entirely. The first pitch was thrown after dusk on Holy Saturday, and for the next eight hours the night seemed to suspend its participants between their collective pasts and futures, between their collective sorrows and joys....

The Mysticism of Baseball
Revisado: 12-11-20
This was the single best baseball book I've ever read. The level of detail for each participant in the longest game ever - from players, to owners, to listeners, to the press, to the stadium staff, and the fans who stuck it out on a cold April day - is unrivaled in any other account. I appreciate the audio effect to make the lines from the radio broadcast sound like they are from the radio itself. An amazing tour of prose and magic surrounding an otherwise meaningless minor league game if not for time standing still one Easter Sunday.
