Historia
They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened. Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them.

WHO. CHOSE. THIS. NARRATOR?
Revisado: 02-06-25
I love Grady Hendrix. I love how funny and ironic his books are. I’ve enjoyed every one of them til this one. This sounds like PRE-Teen Fiction. This narrator makes this book sound like Taylor Swift lyrics. I’ve been so looking forward to this book. I’m halfway through it and doubt I’ll finish it. And I have listened to all his books multiple times. Huge miss with this narrator, who sounds like she’s narrating that film they show girls in fifth grade that explains menstruation.

Dark. Depressing. Upsetting. Narrator.
Revisado: 10-28-24
Stephen King must have been in a deep funk when he wrote Apt Pupil. I just despised it. I remember hating it when I read it when it first came out. Hearing it was more of a bummer. Of course, Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me came from two 2️⃣ of these stories. There was a lot of joy in those two movies, but none to be found in this audiobook. The narrator sounded like Boris Karloff on quaaludes, ponderous, slow, menacing in the wrong places, and I finally caved and quit listening about halfway through The Body. This listen of three very influential stories(didn’t make it to the last one)just put me in a bad head space. Every King novel has some levity somewhere but these stories, read by this narrator, were lead balloons.

Historia
Before the nightmares began, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary, controlled life. But the dreams—invasive images of blood and brutality—torture her, driving Yeong-hye to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. It’s a small act of independence, but it interrupts her marriage and sets into motion an increasingly grotesque chain of events at home. As her husband, her brother-in-law, and sister each fight to reassert their control, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that’s become sacred to her.

Revisado: 10-20-24
Critically acclaimed award winning books arent always pleasant to experience. This is a sad tale about a sad girl who is victimized by three important men in her life because she has a compulsion which takes her out of the norm. Is she insane to start with, or made insane by the reactions of people who don’t understand? Would she have had a different fate if she had been embraced or even just accepted instead of ostracized and abandoned because of her compulsion? An uncomfortable read, although it is beautifully written and read.

Love the book. Narrator makes me grit my teeth.
Revisado: 09-21-24
I can’t stand Will Pattons voice. I bought this book because I love Holly Gibney and wanted to know where her arc in Kings books began. The book is superb. I bought it in spite of Will Patton. Ugh. His voice, when it goes up, is teeth grindingly shrill. I always say never again. Why didn’t they choose someone else to read these great books? I ALWAYS prefer Stephen Kings narration. Or anybody’s, to that of Will Patton. I was delighted when Jamie Dutton eliminated his character in Yellowstone😂. And I don’t even like Yellowstone. Just to not have to hear his voice…sweet.

The Narrator SUCKS. Who makes these decisions? I gave up on the book.
Revisado: 08-20-24
I dislike the narrator. He sounds like a grandpa reading bedtime stories. He needs to narrate children’s books. This is a crime novel, Aside from that, I’m liking the book. But the narrator is totally inappropriate. The longer I listen to him the more irritated I get. Seriously, like thinking of stopping the book over him. He makes the women sound stupid, the men sound like high school boys. Really bad. I QUIT THE BOOK over the narrator. Too frickin droll. 🤮

Revisado: 08-18-24
I listened to this book for free and I really enjoyed it. It kept me engaged the whole way through it. It’s the first I read of Allen Eskens and I’m so glad I tried it. I’m such a picky reader! At the first hint of inauthenticity or self indulgence on the part of the writer, I lose interest immediately in a book. This one rang true. The narrator was excellent, the writing was taut and economical. The characters were lovable and the villains really villainous. New fan of this writer!

War. Love. Giant ass crows. What’s not to like?
Revisado: 07-12-24
This is the story of what lead up to The Blacktongue Thief. It’s a tale of war, and of a society where women are warriors. It’s only fitting that the narrator is a woman, with a gorgeous voice and beautiful Spanish accent. The writing is superb. There is a poem in the book that is so stunning it stopped me in my tracks to listen, and I am NOT a poetry fan. The way the poem ends…💔. It’s a wonderful book. And , oh, did I mention the war corvids? That can talk? Oh yeah, you need to read this book. Even if fantasy is not your genre of choice. Buehlman’s The Lesser Dead is a bona fide masterpiece. He’s among my top three writers, and the other two have been around for fifty years plus. The future looks bright for this talent and we get to go along with him for the ride.

Christopher Buehlman, Genius
Revisado: 07-09-24
This is not my genre AT ALL. But I love all things Christopher Buehlman. I could listen to him reading restaurant menus and be enthralled. He reeled me in with this story of the people and non people in it. What could be more compelling than a horse sized crow trained in the ways of war? Just imaging one shaking out her feathers gives me a rush. And I felt strongly about the love OF the horse that these people felt. If you’ve ever wrapped your arms around a horse’s neck and breathed in his scent, you know it’s magical. This is a great story, beautifully read by the author, whose talent is limitless. I think he can do anything. I’m now reading the prequel, The Daughter’s War, and it’s great.

Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

Revisado: 06-24-24
This was a very, very good book. I just recently got up the nerve to see the movie, which was okay but dated. The book is far superior. This author flexes his prose skills with beautiful language in places. It’s really scary stuff brought much more to life than it was in the movie. The narrator was exceptional. So glad I read it.

This is a very good book. It kept me guessing all the way through it. The crimes in it were unspeakable, from the original, long past crimes to the current ones. This guy is a good writer. The narration was well done. Well worth your time.
