Historia
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

Love the way epistolary novel & time travel story blended
Revisado: 08-02-23
I don’t have anything to say other than the audio narration made it really easy to keep track of who was writing, and I loved the unique tapestry of the futuristic sci-fi world. The backstory was bare bones, but it worked perfectly to highlight this epic romance amidst a robotic enslavement to war.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Long beyond belief but well worth the wait
Revisado: 07-29-23
Ironically, I only started listening to this book because of AMC’s Immortal Universe, but Witching Hour is mesmerizing. There are a LOT of things I disagree with Anne Rice on (the chapter devoted to anti-choice propaganda for example) but the history of the Mayfair Witches themselves was amazing. I don’t think I want to read the next two novels because I heard it only goes downhill from here, but as a stand-alone story it was a thrill.

It’s as if her life only began once Moon appeared in it. The desultory copywriting work, the boyfriend, and the want of anything not-Moon quickly fall away when she beholds the idol in concert, where Moon dances as if his movements are creating their own gravitational field; on live streams, as fans from around the world comment in dozens of languages; even on skincare products endorsed by the wildly popular Korean boy band, of which Moon is the youngest, most luminous member. Seized by ineffable desire, our unnamed narrator begins writing Y/N fanfic.

reads like a fascinating theory of knowledge essay
Revisado: 07-29-23
I’m not going to lie, I much prefer narrative fiction with a thread I can properly follow, but the narrator was delightfully weird and the audio performance was flat in a way that enhanced the story. The Kpop industry already IS a twisted allegory for sublimation of the self in pursuit of impossible desires, but this is one of the more interesting ruminations on the subject that I’ve seen.

Dear Reader, I Cried

Very well-read and engrossing story that had me bawling my eyes out a few time. Evelyn Hugo is very richly crafted, and letting us in behind the scenes of her biography is a great way to make it feel all the more real.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Moving & Incisive
Revisado: 10-27-22
I’ve never watched iCarly or Sam & Cat, so I didn’t have a personal connection to Jennette McCurdy. But I came across an excerpt on Variety and knew I needed to read (or hear) the whole thing. The narrator has such a strong and unique voice, managing to make her tale of suffering enthralling and even at times humorous. It’s a must-read (or listen lol) for anyone who has experienced abuse or an ED, and even more so for anyone seeking to understand the victims and survivors of either.

Faithful and Fabulous
Revisado: 02-14-22
I have taken to listening to the audiobook while I pour over the pages of the graphic novel, because the art is too beautiful not to look at. But even someone first being introduced to the world of Sandman cannot do better than this audiobook if they are unable or unwilling to read the comic. The actors breathe life into the characters and Gaiman’s narration (and added descriptions) are perfectly suited to the tone of his mythical tale.

Historia
If I Had Your Face is a riveting debut novel set in contemporary Seoul, South Korea, about four young women making their way in a world defined by impossible standards of beauty, after-hours room salons catering to wealthy men, ruthless social hierarchies, and K-pop mania. Together, their stories tell a gripping tale at once unfamiliar and unmistakably universal, in which their tentative friendships may turn out to be the thing that ultimately saves them.

Beautiful Interpretation
Revisado: 02-14-22
While this story may not be to everyone’s taste, being a slice-of-life of four (really, five) somewhat gloomy lives, this audiobook is a great way to immerse yourself in modern Seoul and how it treats the women living in it.
The writing alone might not have been enough to distinguish the four POV characters starkly, being a debut novel, but the performances from the voice actors (including author Frances Cha herself) really infused each girl with personality and helped strengthen the bonds of friendship forming or strengthening in each chapter.
