Historia
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

More of same, nothing new
Revisado: 12-15-24
I’m starting to get tired of some of these authors who stretch their books out into multiple volumes. They really could use an editor. I love the early books in this series, that’s why I bought this one. But really this story has been over now for a couple of volumes. It’s always been complicated trying to sort through all the various Bobs, but this one didn’t really explore any new material and was still confusing as to which Bob was which. I’m sad, but I’m done with this series.

Historia
Hardly anyone ever leaves Des Moines, Iowa. But Bill Bryson did, and after 10 years in England he decided to go home, to a foreign country. In an ageing Chevrolet Chevette, he drove nearly 14,000 miles through 38 states to compile this hilarious and perceptive state-of-the-nation report on small-town America.

An outdated, snarky, and cynical view of America.
Revisado: 04-15-23
I am usually a big fan of Bill Bryson, but this book seems like it was written by his bitter, frustrated, teenage self. He rarely has anything positive to say about any of the places he visited on this trip. and the narrator seems to relish this distasteful snarkiness. As a Bill Bryson fan, I can affirm that this one should be skipped.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

He said, she said
Revisado: 07-21-22
This book is really difficult to listen to because of the incessant references to who was speaking. The lines of dialogue are so short it seemed all you hear is “he said“, she said”. I typically like Will Wheaton, but here, his monotone delivery leaves so little definition to the characters that you never quite know who he’s portraying at any given moment. I had to give up on it.

Historia
For years, the ancient alien AI known as Skippy (the Magnificent, don’t forget that part) has been able to do one impossible thing after another. What is his secret? It’s simple: 100 percent Grade-A extreme awesomeness. And also because he had never been faced with an opponent of equal power. Until now. This time, he might need a little help from a band of filthy monkeys.

I gotta hand it to Alanson. He sure knows how to take a story that is only maybe two books long and stretch it into 13. Nothing to see here, move along until we finally get word he’s furthering the storyline.

Historia
After saving the world many times, the Merry Band of Pirates have accepted the inevitable: Earth is doomed. All they can do is try to bring a few thousand people to safety, before vicious aliens arrive to destroy humanity's home world. No. There is one other thing they can do: hit the enemy so hard that the aliens will regret they ever heard of humans.

Just more filler
Revisado: 02-21-20
I really loved the first 3 books in this series, but Alanson has succumbed to the likely Audible encouragement to stretch a single book into 10 volumes in order to milk your readers of all their credits. I’m really tired of it. So, if you’re considering this one, just know he doesn’t move the story line forward at all. He doesn’t develop the characters any further, and to be sure, he doesn’t get Skippy any closer to “the collective”. He ends with a cliffhanger that would indicate he might just finally wrap this thing up in the next volume, but I’m going to wait to read the reviews before I give him any more of my money.

Historia
299 Days: The Preparation, the first audiobook in the 299 Days series, depicts the inner struggles Grant must face as he exists in a social system he recognizes as unsustainable and on the verge of collapse, but one in which he has built his life around. What begins as a return to his roots, self-sufficiency and independence, becomes a full blown move to prepare for what may come.

Absurdly biased
Revisado: 11-12-19
I was hoping for an insightful but enjoyable story of prepared people overcoming the disaster of societal collapse. But Tate blames the collapse entirely on liberals. It’s absurdly biased and insulting even to conservatives. And he tries so hard to point out that particular races are not to blame that he inadvertently reveals his own racism. It’s really too bad because there are elements of the story that would have been fun to play out.
Another issue I have is that this is at most a two book series, but he unnecessarily stretches it into multiple volumes in a cheap attempt to squeeze as much money out of us as he can.

Adolescent and way too short
Revisado: 07-13-19
I was really looking forward to this book, and was really enjoying Adam Baldwin‘s performance, when suddenly it was over! I failed to notice that the book is only just over two hours long. Be aware! It’s not worth one of my monthly credits. I really hate that audible pushes these short stories out at the same price as a whole novel. As for the story, there’s some really funny moments, but ultimately it devolves to the level of fart jokes.

Historia
Dan Delgado is a private investigator. When it comes to finding cheating spouses, corporate thieves, or runaway teenagers, he’s unenthusiastic, and unmatched. As a former San Francisco detective, he misses more meaningful work, but he hasn’t had the heart for it since his wife’s death five years prior. That is, until a phone call from a distraught mother, an illegal immigrant who can’t go to the police, puts him on the hunt for a missing little girl. By the time he reaches the mother’s small home, she’s missing, too. The circumstances are strange....

Interesting premise that goes nowhere
Revisado: 05-26-19
The book starts off with an interesting idea, but never really goes anywhere with it. Like too many SF adventure stories, it sets a good tone only to devolve into tedious, overly macho battles with the aliens. C’mon, the hero takes out the evil dominating alien with a fist fight? Geez. And he is on a tirade against the Mormon church, which is in no way affiliated with the organizations he contends with, but, by implication he condemns all Mormons. Easy scapegoats I guess, but I’d like to see him attack any other religion like this and see what happens. And I’m disappointed with Bray here too, as he never took the time to find out how to pronounce many names of people and places. Inexcusable.

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Abandon hope, all ye who enter here
Revisado: 08-17-18
I was hoping for an adventurous survival tale, only to be drug into this didactic, depressing lecture. The author doesn’t even give us a reason to care for the characters. We only get enough information to give them some context. This is a soapbox diatribe about the risk of an EMP attack on the United States. He assumes a worst case scenario, resulting in the most disastrous outcome for the country. That’s fine if intended as a work of fiction, but his implication throughout the book is that this is a very real threat to the US. A little bit of research shows the likelihood of an attack like this being impossibly small.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.
