I love Sylph! Very engaging characters
Revisado: 03-19-25
My only negative is that I kind of wish the love stories were more prominent. Maybe it's good story telling to leave me always wanting more, I am not sure.
But, the characters all change and grow over time. Some characters I hated initially, end up being ones I love by the end. There is a tremendous amount of action. Some books like this go a little nuts showing stats over and over, but this series plays with that a bit.

Historia
In the distant past, a time of magic and swordplay, there lived Harold, the mightiest lich of all, a master of arcane sciences, and a challenger of gods. After reaching the pinnacle of his power and finding it surprisingly bland, Harold waged a cataclysmic war against the gods, aiming to shatter the very system that confined him.

Revisado: 05-26-24
I think the world needs a lot more stories like this with all powerful but jolly protagonists. I'm frankly tired of every story being about underdogs who overcome things. It's so nice to just start out as a god in a good mood and go from there.

Very funny
Revisado: 05-20-24
I haven't seen the movie in many years, but there is a lot of fun meta humor that comes from this book being decades more recent than the movie.
Pretty unusual for the audiobook to come out so long after the movie, but I'm glad it did. Hope they do the rest of the series!

Surprised that there was so much I hadn't heard
Revisado: 02-20-23
My favorite parts were all the excerpts of discarded ideas Douglas typed up on the way to the final versions. Even the stuff he never used was creative and funny.

Historia
A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale. Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function.

Historia
Flatland, like our own world, is on the verge of the millenium. On the last day of the year 1999, a Square—hitherto undistinguished from the other shapes of his two-dimensional world—receives the Gospel of Three Dimensions, revealed to that world's flat inhabitants only once every a thousand years. Transformed by a truth he is unable to conceal, he is promptly condemned as a heretic.

good, but Sphereland is better
Revisado: 07-17-04
I wish there was an audiobook version of Sphereland. Flatland is the classic book on this subject and is quite enjoyable to listen to. But, in my opinion, Sphereland has less discussion of the social structure of flatland and spends more time enlightening the reader about how we can think of four dimensions in our three dimensional world.

abridged is bad!
Revisado: 07-12-04
This is an abridged audiobook. That might not be so bad for other Pern books, but this is the first in the series. This is the book that lays the groundwork for the entire series, but unfortunately almost all of the groundwork is summarized in the beginning of the audiobook. I left with a feeling that I had missed a lot of the background information.

The construction of the world's first truly accurate clock starts a race against, well, time. For if the perfect clock starts ticking, Time, as we know it, will stop. And then the trouble will really begin. Subtle, sly, thought-provoking, and hilarious, Thief of Time is Terry Pratchett at his best. "This delightful production keeps the listener spellbound," says AudioFile.

I was able to deal with the voices
Revisado: 07-12-04
I agree with other reviews about how the changes in the voices are a bad thing. But, I had already read this book and really liked it, so I decided to buy this audiobook anyway. These reviews had prepared me for the worst (in the same way that the reviews of Star Wars I were so bad that I was pleasantly surprised when I went to see it) and I was happy to learn that I was able to deal with the voice changes. Actually, the narrator stays mostly the same for the first half and then I think changes 3 times in the last half. I wish it wasn't so, but regardless I still enjoyed listening to it and plan on listening to it many times in the future.
