Ending dragged on too long
Revisado: 10-23-20
I enjoyed the main arc of the story: who is Morgan? Why is she here? Is she who she says she is?
But then once we answered those questions, there were still several chapters that felt unnecessary. It was like the author wasn’t quite sure how to end the story, so she attempted to “wrap up” side plots and characters that hadn’t been developed enough in the beginning to really warrant a mention at the end.
I did love the narrator! She did an amazing job of differentiating characters with her tone and inflection without forcing it.

Decent story, bad narration
Revisado: 10-01-20
The story was perfectly fine - exactly what you’d expect it to be, based on the synopsis. The male narrator was absolutely swoon worthy and I wish he had just read the whole thing. The female narrator ruined it for me. She was robotic and stilted and over-pronounced every word - it was painful to listen to

Hated the ending
Revisado: 12-21-19
I loved it until the last chapter. But the ending ruined it for me. Avoiding spoilers, I understand why the characters made the decisions they made, I just STRONGLY disagreed with them. And that tainted the whole experience for me.
I would maybe still recommend it, because it was a short, easy, moderately engaging listen... but it definitely wasn’t my favorite.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

Amazing story, terrible narrator
Revisado: 06-10-19
I almost didn’t make it past the first chapter because the reader was so robotic and hard to listen to. But, once I sped it up to 1.75x, her cadence became more natural, though still very emotionless. The story, however, is worth it.

Historia
Likened to the works of Faulkner and Dickens when it was first published 20 years ago, this extraordinarily accomplished debut novel is a brilliantly plotted story of forbidden love and piercing political drama, centered on the tragic decline of an Indian family in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family.

Difficult start, but worth it in the end
Revisado: 05-04-19
I had trouble getting through the first couple chapters. The style of interweaving flashbacks with the current timeline made it very hard to follow. After almost 2 hours of listening, I couldn’t have told you what this book was even about.
But I persisted, and I’m so glad I did. The story and the timeline gets clearer and clearer as the narrative progresses, and the last 2-3 chapters are heartbreaking and beautiful. This was absolutely worth the difficult start.

Kept me guessing!
Revisado: 03-13-18
Every time I thought I had it figured out, there would be another twist, which would throw me for a loop. There were definitely times the detailed descriptions dragged on too long, and I just wanted her to get to the point, but the story kept me coming back.
