Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Antidote to despair
Revisado: 02-07-23
Working my way through this author's work; non-corny pro-humanity. Oddballs, curmudgeons and the wide-eyed making the case for community.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Not for the willfully blind but highly recommended otherwise. Masterfully narrated and no small feat considering the diverse and complex characters.

Historia
A Saint on Death Row will introduce you to a young man whose history, innate goodness, and final days you will never forget. It also shines a necessary light on America's racist and deeply flawed legal system. A Saint on Death Row is an absorbing, sobering, and deeply spiritual story that illuminates the moral imperatives too often ignored in the headlong quest for justice.

I'll be thinking about these people and this miscarriage of justice gratefully and with insufficient outrage as it has nowhere to go should it explode inside me as it should.

In Creatures of a Day, he and his patients confront the difficulty of these challenges. Although these people have come to Yalom seeking relief, recognition, or meaning, they discover that such things are rarely found in the places where we think to look.

Far from being a 12-step program - this is the un-program in 12 sections - Lizards Eat Butterflies deconstructs the myths that trap us into victimhood, isolation, and futility. Having traveled the world for three decades of work and with the worldwide film success of Future Dreaming, along with many lectures and workshops, he weaves the narrative of this book to create a tapestry of provoking, thoughtful, and considered reexaminations of our dominant myths and perspective impairments.

I have to think on this one a minute or several in order to articulate my experience of this story, perhaps most especially the fore and after words which were fascinating and ponderable for days. Humans are just so peculiar and tragic.

Historia
The area surrounding Cashiers, North Carolina, is home to people of all kinds, but the world that Jacob McNeely lives in is crueler than most. His father runs a methodically organized meth ring, with local authorities on the dime to turn a blind eye to his dealings. Having dropped out of high school and cut himself off from his peers, Jacob has been working for this father for years, all on the promise that his payday will come eventually.

Riveting and profoundly sad
Revisado: 01-20-21
I read the reviews before buying and found the experience matched the overall sentiment therein. If you have the stomach for the tragedy that is Jesse Pinkmam-Breaking Bad, you'll have no problem riding this one down into the darkest depths of human despair. Growing up in white trash hell myself I give this novel a 9 of 10 for authenticity on that sordid score. Worth the listen, well written and flawlessly performed.
