Amazing follow up
Revisado: 12-17-24
The first book was good but a lot of character and world building. A bit of a convoluted ending. But, this one does not disappoint. The reluctant hero trope gets a little taxing but with good payoff. Onto the next one.

Too slow and uninteresting for me
Revisado: 03-02-23
Generally I enjoy King books because of the journey. Few I’ve read have great endings so it is more the world and character building that made me fall in love with him as an author. I have read some of his older novels and some of his newer. Unfortunately this one missed the mark for me and I’m the minority.
I think to me it just dragged on with nothing really happening or characters you cared for or thought about when you put it down. It could have probably been half its length. It’s starts good, becomes interesting, then drags it’s mystery until the reveal which is a bit disappointing and predictable. I loved Bag of Bones but this feels like a watered down version of it. It probably was a novella or short story and the publishers said, “we need a novel!” So King added a lot of filler and dragged it out.
It’s easy enough to finish if you just have to read everything King writes, but he’s written far better characters and stories.

Historia
For generations, the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt—was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark. Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core.

Struggled to finish
Revisado: 09-15-19
The narrator of the series is still great. My problem with this 3rdbook in the series is that it meanders too much in one long event. The story doesn't move forward as quickly as I'd hoped. It's easy to see why the live action series used half of a season for this whole book. My other gripe with the series as a whole is it does not continue character stories throughout. You fall in love with characters like Roberta Draper, Chrisjen Avasarala or Pax and then you are left wondering what happened to them and what's going on in their lives, while meeting new characters far less interesting. All in all, it's a must read to continue the series, but it's by far the weakest of the first three. Here's hoping the next one is better.

Historia
The second book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Caliban's War shows a solar system on the brink of war, and the only hope of peace rests on James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante's shoulders. We are not alone. On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes.

Better than the first!
Revisado: 04-19-19
Character development, world building and pacing were all much better than the first. I absolutely love the series and will definitely continue on. It is never dull and always keeps you wanting more. I liked that this book delved more into the political intrigue and military operations than the first book. I would have liked to see more from Fred Johnson’s operations and point of view as he is one of my favorite characters but I understand that this story centers on the crew of the Rocinante. Performance is great as well. Mays does an excellent job with accents and giving each character personality through tone and dialect. Do yourself a favor and spend the credit.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

My favorite King
Revisado: 01-04-19
I’ve read quite a few King novels and am starting to consider myself a “constant reader”. I can safely say that this is my favorite and it would take a lot for another to take the throne. It is the only King that held my interest from start to finish. It’s probably the most satisfying ending to a King novel. The narration is superb. Great efforts all around. My only regret is that I let the premise keep this one in my library for years before I finally picked it up. Big mistake!

Another good one from Blake and Bray.
Revisado: 05-08-17
I love RC Bray as a narrator and Russell Blake never lets me down although many of his series start to follow certain patterns. This installment was good but I felt the first two were more suspenseful and better all around. The Roxy-Black witty exchanges felt forced here as does the interactions with Stan, although they can still be funny. I guessed the killer early on in this one as it was pretty obvious to me. The first two books I did not. All in all, worth a listen, but don't spend a full audible credit on this. Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Revisado: 04-06-17
I need more RC Bray and I need more Skippy. I've listened to RC Bray perform The Martian and loved it but didn't think much about the narration. I discovered this book accidentally, generally avoiding sci-fi books after some disappointments. The reviews caught my interest so I said what the heck. What a pleasant surprise. While the story isn't the most amazing ever, it really serves as a back drop to Bray's incredible narration and performance of Skippy, as well as his interactions with the main protagonist Bishop. That is where this book shines. Be patient, it's well worth it.

Good intro to Will Trent!
Revisado: 12-16-16
I really enjoyed this book. I know a lot of people have complained about the narration which I can agree with but I guess I got used to Michael Kramer while indulging on the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson so it didn't bother me too much. I felt this book kept me engaged and wasn't overly violent or graphic. My first Karin Slaughter experience was Pretty Girls and this was not nearly as gratuitous. It does have its flaws. It becomes predictable and a lot of the character connections are conveniently contrived, leaving a lot to be desired in the surprise and thrills department. Ultimately, knowing that the series gets better it's not a bad place to start and has me anxious to grab book number 2.

Not as good as the first two
Revisado: 12-09-16
SPOILERS: This one frustrated me a bit. The plot was pretty simple and expected. I like my heroes to also have a human aspect and Jet is a super hero that can survive anything without much trouble. Her final showdown with the villain was anticlimactic and I felt her choices were not what you'd expect from a female super spy. Did she really put her weapon down to fist fight because he called her chicken. I'm also starting to get tired of a different love affair every book. You'd think someone who lives this type of life and experienced the abuse she did as a child would be a little more guarded when it comes to men. All in all I won't give up on Jet. I still devour these books but I'm worried they are losing steam and it's only book 3. The first two books she was more of a realistic character (with the exception of jeopardizing her mission to save one child in a city full of child sex slaves). Now she is becoming a bit unbelievable. Without some intense struggles and more natural mistakes I'm not sure I'll enjoy the rest of the series.

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Was a decent sequel
Revisado: 11-17-16
It was hard to get into the story. The overall plot is predictable and the most enjoyable parts come in the form of The Shining references. I felt it dragged on a bit and the characters were hard to really like. It wraps up pretty decently but I never really felt like there was any real danger. Our heroes are all powerful. Definitely not my least favorite King or my favorite. Somewhere in between.
