just listen...
Revisado: 05-27-22
A great story that was totally unexpected. I highly recommend that you listen to this audiobook. I was pleasantly surprised at the pace, tone and tenor of the story. A great light car listen that makes you think about the gift of creativity and the bane of it being constrained by business...not for the good of the customers but for the good of profits.

Historia
This comprehensive history sets yoga in its global cultural context for the first time. It leads us on a fascinating journey across the world, from arcane religious rituals and medieval body-magic, through muscular Christianity and the British Raj, to the Indian nationalist movement and the arrival of yoga in the 20th-century West. We discover how the practice reached its present-day ubiquity and how it became embedded in powerful social currents shaping the world's future.

A Great Story
Revisado: 12-03-20
It took me a while to get into this audiobook. Although the story is absolutely AMAZING, the narration leaves much to be desired. The narration was so mediocre that I almost returned it. Then I sped the narration speed up to 1.65 and not only found it bearable at that speed, but quite enjoyable.
The narrator is not bad, just at normal speed it is difficult to bear.. moves too slow, which takes away from the marvelous story of the book.

Historia
Ancient China collides with newfangled America in this epic tale of opium smugglers, sea pirates, and dueling clipper ships. Brilliantly illuminating one of the least-understood areas of American history, best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin now traces our fraught relationship with China back to its roots: the unforgiving nineteenth-century seas that separated a brash, rising naval power from a battered ancient empire. It is a prescient fable for our time, one that surprisingly continues to shed light on our modern relationship with China.

Great Storytelling
Revisado: 11-09-20
The narration is amazing however the story, though interesting, is middling at best. Not sure what could have made it better. I'm sure it was well researched however it felt a little forced.

This was a good audiobook. It started very slow and I put it down several times and almost stopped completely, but then it got very interesting. The narration, not the story was frustrating at first but if you adjust the speed to about 1.2 it makes it much more palatable.

Historia
We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.

Excellent audiobook. Very informative. Learned a lot. there are a few spots where the narration skips... probably more technical than narrative.

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

A great book that opened my eyes
Revisado: 02-06-20
The US is a great country that was built on institutional racism and discrimination. This book highlights so many of the different ways that this nation, on a federal, state and local level prevented home ownership and therefore the path to generational wealth creation for an entire group of people simply because of the color of our skin. Ronald Reagan was right in naming an "Evil Empire" yet he was wrong in the nation that he claimed it to be.

An EXTREMELY basic, platitude filled overview
Revisado: 02-01-20
Author is knowledgeable but glosses over facts...great if you have NO understanding of real estate development at all. It does have some value and a few anecdotal tidbits, but not worth the time or treasure. Narration is great at 1.5 speed.
