Historia
At last, the enigmatic partner of Elvis Cole (The Two Minute Rule) takes center stage in this pulse-racing thriller. When Joe Pike is charged with safeguarding a wealthy heiress, he discovers protecting the sole witness to a crime is nothing compared to protecting an LA party girl from her own self-destruction.... Larkin Conner Barkley lives like the City of Angels is hers for the taking. Then suddenly she sees another car’s metal-on-metal explosion of a terrible accident and, dazed, finds herself the single witness in a secret federal investigation.

Historia
In an alleyway in Los Angeles, an old man, clutching faded newspaper clippings and gasping his last words to a cop, lies dying of a gunshot wound. The victim claims to be P.I. Elvis Cole’s long-lost father - a stranger who has always haunted his son. As a teenager, Cole searched desperately for his father. As a man, he faces the frightening possibility that this murder victim was himself a killer. Caught in limbo between a broken love affair and way too much publicity over his last case, Cole at first resists getting involved with this new case. Then it consumes him.

What makes these books good?
Revisado: 10-18-22
I have listened 10 of these in order. I’ll be going to to the end. Some reviews aren’t so great and yes, the plots aren’t perfect, the action has lulls, and the narration is hit and miss. This is, however, to miss the point.
These books shine because of three things. First, the dialogue is sharp as hell, and brings out interesting and surprising things in both major and minor characters. The personalities just shine.
Second, the thoughts and musings of our friend Elvis Cole are endlessly entertaining, and comforting too, as he battles personal demons that a reader can relate to.
Finally, the friendship between Cole and Pike is a blast, and what they get done is pure escapist fantasy.
All of this makes for some really fun reading or listening time. Thumbs up.

I don’t get it …
Revisado: 10-16-22
A few books ago in the series, Lucy’s ex-husband Richard pays Cole a visit at his house and makes some threats. In this book, Cole sees Richard and describes him as a man that he has never seen before.
These books are so good. I just don’t get how a mistake like that could happen.

Historia
In his 50s, Michael Gates Gill had it all: a big house in the suburbs, a loving family, and a top job at an ad agency with a six-figure salary. By the time he turned 60, he had lost everything except his Ivy League education and his sense of entitlement. First, he was downsized at work. Next, an affair ended his 20-year marriage. Then, he was diagnosed with a slow-growing brain tumor, prognosis undetermined. Around the same time, his girlfriend gave birth to a son.

This is a very heartwarming life story, from someone who is very honest and humble. Well written and also very well narrated, it moves along at a good pace but still rewards you with some solid emotional content. I’ll probably be back to it a third time :).

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Such disappointing narration
Revisado: 07-14-21
This is a well written and important book.
How disappointing then, to have to listen to it be read like this. The narrator read one phrase at a time, with obviously no reason in or clue about the meaning of the sentences.
Brutal.

I’m hooked on these books. GG’s unhurried, measured reading perfectly matches the meditative content. There is action, but always understated. The art is in the dialogues, and the reflections of our hero. What can I say. I love them all and this one holds up the gold standard.

Historia
To anyone interested in small-boat cruising and voyaging, the names Lin and Larry Pardey need no introduction. As world-girdling sailors who roamed the planet on a pair of small, engineless boats that they built themselves, the Pardeys established their hard-earned reputations by eloquently (and sometimes controversially) telling their stories through a series of best-selling books and manuals, and countless seminars and boat shows.

Great content, questionable packaging.
Revisado: 02-20-17
You've got to love the story of a couple who lived a unique lifestyle, their way, and paved the path for a lot of aspiring world sailors. But wow, you have a to have a high tolerance for cliches and expressions for WW2 that were worn out by the 70s to get through this book. Unless you have a twisted sense of humour, in which case you'll get to add some lols to your sailing stories.
