Historia
Emotional labor is essential to our society and economy, but it’s so often invisible. In this groundbreaking, journalistic deep dive, Rose Hackman shares the stories of hundreds of women, tracing the history of this kind of work and exposing common manifestations of the phenomenon. But Hackman doesn’t simply diagnose a problem—she empowers us to combat this insidious force and forge pathways for radical evolution, justice, and change.

Excellent book that makes you think
Revisado: 05-16-23
I really enjoyed this book. My husband listened to it first, and then recommended it to me. It was a refreshing listen to, that highlighted emotional labor without getting too hostile (which I totally understand when it happens, but not coming away from the book mad myself because it is maddening to carry so much extra labor felt like a relief.)

We live in a world oriented toward greatness, one in which we feel compelled to be among the wealthiest, most powerful, and most famous. This book explains why no one truly benefits from this competitive social order, and reveals how another way of life is possible—a good-enough life for all.

I was super disappointed
Revisado: 09-01-22
This book was boring, slow, had no new interesting ideas, repeated itself, and was more about bashing excellence then actually addressing finding happiness in the good.

Interesting, but annoying at the same time.
Revisado: 06-16-19
It would be an interesting book, except the author spends the whole thing trying to get you out of the frying pan, into the fire. I enjoyed hearing the background of the history or Mormonism, and the conflicting historical accounts, but didn’t need her constant attempt to push her version of Christianity into the story, and onto the listener. It’s no better than what a Mormon would be doing to get you to believe their version.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

One of the most engaging books I’ve ever heard.
Revisado: 05-04-19
I would never, never, never read this book. The only way to hear this story is from Trevor Noah’s own mouth, all the accents, all the inflections, all the emotion. His reading of his book was perfection. I seriously couldn’t decide between laughing, crying, and feeling all the feels throughout the whole thing. My family is from South Africa, and his whole story resonated with me as deeply familiar, but was also such a beautiful insightful view into the racial background that I didn’t get to see as strongly as a child.

Historia
In 2012, Mormon General Authority Marlin K. Jensen acknowledged that members are leaving the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "in droves". Access to the internet is often credited and blamed for this mass exodus, where members learn about problematic doctrines and cover-ups of LDS history. Many are happy as Mormons. And many are not. Those who leave, and those doubters who stay face struggles that few others can understand.

More like a school research paper than a book.
Revisado: 05-02-19
This read more like a school research paper than a book, which was fine, and very interesting for what it was, but it never flowed like the author had any expertise of her own. As a exmormon, it was very interesting, and thoughtful as a breakdown of many of the false mind tricks you can carry with you, even after breaking away from Mormonism.

Historia
Women want to be in love, get married, and live happily ever after. Yet disrespect for men and disregard for the value, feelings, and needs of husbands has fast become the standard for male-female relations in America. Those two attitudes clash in unfortunate ways to create struggle and strife in what could be a beautiful relationship.

Giant piece of garbage.
Revisado: 12-04-18
I’ve been happily married for 20 years, (so I feel somewhat experienced at keeping a husband happy,) I had this book recommended by a lady on Instagram, so I decided to give it a try (because marriage is made by effort, and wanting to constantly improve) but this was a hostile piece of garbage, in which such ugly tones and negativity were aimed at women, and the poor men in their lives. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing, and stay happy with my awesome husband, while completely ignoring the trash that this book is.

Good, until it wasn’t.
Revisado: 08-06-18
Skip the last few chapters, they get really stuck in the mud over the author’s disdain for teachers and how they teach. But everything up until the bagging on teachers for ages was awesome.
