Historia
Comedy is king. From multimillion-dollar TV specials to sold-out stand-up shows and TikTok stardom, comedy has never been more popular, democratized, or influential. Comedians have become organizing forces across culture—as trusted as politicians and as fawned-over as celebrities—yet comedy as an art form has gone under-considered throughout its history, even as it has ascended as a cultural force.

A very good listen.
Revisado: 12-16-23
Jesse is a better writer than a narrator but I'm happy to hear his voice reading this well-thought, deep dive into modern and not-so modern comedy. The book spans a few generations and shows how each has its relevant features that make up the whole.

The Last Action Heroes opens in May 1990 in Cannes, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone waltzing together, cheered on by a crowd of famous faces. After years of bitter combat, the world’s biggest action stars have at last made peace. In this wildly entertaining account of the golden age of the action movie, Nick de Semlyen charts Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s carnage-packed journey from enmity to friendship against the backdrop of Reagan’s America and the Cold War.

Revisado: 08-30-23
Bronson delivers yet another great read of course.
These are fascinating stories for anyone fascinated by these stars and the period that propelled them to stardom. I found the volume so easily digestible, like many others I was wanting more in depth coverage - as I am a voracious hunter of this kind of lore. Don't let that deter you, listener, you'll have a great time with it. I sure did.

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

I loved hearing these stories read by the man himself. I only wish that I didn't blow through it in one day, it's something to savor slowly and studiously.

Historia
Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

A nice treat, but no meat
Revisado: 07-29-22
It was really cool to hear Jim read this little short story, I do think he did a fine job! He does occasionally dip into a John Wayne style of cadence which I found entertaining on my own level.
If it's Dresden, I'm here for it, but this story itself isn't much. A cool new character is introduced, but beside that I found it to be wholly insubstantial. I do however, recommend it.

Historia
A mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video-game industry. In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video-game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But all that would change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a former Mattel executive who knew nothing about video games and everything about fighting uphill battles.

I was born in 1980. That might be enough said, but if not - this story sheds light on not just corporate competition, but passion for taming the frontier of what would become the early video game craze.

Historia
Bob Odenkirk’s career is inexplicable. And yet he will try like hell to explicate it for you. Charting a “Homeric” decades-long “odyssey” from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago to a dramatic career full of award nominations - with a side trip into the action-man world that is baffling to all who know him - it’s almost like there are many Bob Odenkirks! But there is just one and one is plenty. Featuring humorous tangents, wild characters, and Bob’s trademark unflinching drive, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama is a classic tale told by a determined idiot.

In his song "You Can't Stop Rock and Roll" Ozzy Osbourne sings, "Rock and roll is my religion and my law". And that's why Raising Hell is a must-have for anyone who wants to hear about the iconoclastic culture of headbangers and the wild lives they lead. The book contains the crazy, funny, and sometimes horrifying anecdotes musicians have told about a lifestyle both invigorating and at times self-destructive.

I bailed pretty early. Bad narrator.
Revisado: 10-26-21
I'm a lifelong metalhead and would absolutely love reading these stories, so I figured I'd listen to this book while doing my evil chores around Halloween. The choice of narrator was immediately jarring, but I've stuck it out with others before and came around to enjoy it. Not the case this time. While having excellent diction and a decent voice for... a baseball or golf legend's memoirs... it's just not right for these wild stories and anecdotes. I approximate it to having Dar from Beastmaster recount stories of drug and bodily abuse, which I think I'd actually prefer to this. They hired a Rush fan, I guess. Too corny to continue.

Excellent stories read by the man who lived them.

A little self indulgent, sure, but given the context, I would have nothing less. Bas reads and reacts to his own accounts with genuine glee and emotion, it's obvious the man has amazing energy for his past and future.

It starts off simply enough. (Doesn't it always?) Jack has been on hiatus since the tragic events in Harbingers. With his beloved Gia's encouragement he dips his toe back into the fix-it pool.Christy Pickering's 18-year-old daughter is dating Jerry Bethlehem, a man twice her age. Change of narrator, meh
Revisado: 07-25-19
Admittedly it took me a bit to warm up to Price's careful enunciation, but after 8 books his voice became Jack's.
Hill, while probably a better "actor" does a fine job with everyone but our hero, turning him into a snotty, drunk-lipped slob. I started getting more of a chuckle every time I heard him describe how another character was taking in Jack, usually "calculated, cool, quicker than I've ever seen anyone move!" - just to have him speak a line like a guy trying to goad you into a fight by telling you how bad your sister is in bed.
Overall I enjoyed the story, you will too.
