Another closet erotic novel masquerading as a military suspense novel. Last time I read/listen to this author

Historia
Lieutenant Anthony Pacino reports aboard the “project boat” USS Vermont two years after having survived the catastrophic sinking of the Piranha. Pacino quickly learns that Vermont’s missions are all ultra-secret with the boat reporting only to the sub force commander, the national security advisor, and the president: Vermont does the dirty deeds that need doing in deadly silence and obscurity. After Vermont misses the mark on an easy mission, there are questions asked about her ability to conduct the next mission.

Fiction stranger than truth with romance novel overtones
Revisado: 05-11-22
My impression of this book as submarine thriller/action novel is …. not so much. My first point of contention is that there was too much “romance novel” story lines, both on the Russian side and the US side. I agree somewhat that Russian naval personnel have lots of similarities with US naval personnel, I think there were other ways to show this without distracting from the overall theme of this book. I served on two Nuc submarines aft of frame 85, in the 70s, and have a high degree of respect for the professionalism of the crews that I experienced. My 2nd point of contention is in the depiction of kumbayah attitude after the US and Russian sailors shot torpedos at each other and the US sub sank three Russian subs. This, imho, is far fetched that after having lost all of those comrades to US actions they would be so conciliatory. My 3rd point of contention is that a project boat would, in the midst of a shooting war without knowing whether other enemy subs are close would surface and render aid with the risk of being torpedoed. To me this doesn’t jive with the project boat psyche. I understand that this is fiction, but to me the stories in a book like this should be aligned with reasonable expectations of a real submarine crew actions in similar situations and circumstances. and build from that. To me , this book falls short in that regard.

Historia
At the top of the world… at the bottom of the sea… a war has begun. Below the polar ice cap, an American nuclear submarine moves quietly in the frigid water, tailing a new Russian sub. But the usual, unspoken game of hide-and-seek between opposing captains ends when the Americans hear sounds of disaster and flooding, and the Russian sub sinks at a depth of a thousand feet. The American sub rushes to help, only to join its former quarry in the deep. The situation ignites tensions around the world.
