Difficult to listen to
Revisado: 05-08-23
I listen to books while I do other things around the house. The narrator's accent is thick and very difficult to follow the flow of the narration for this midwest American girl.
I had to keep going back to re-listen.
What I did glean from the story sounded interesting with much cultural insight, but I chose to discontinue it for the reasons listed above.
BTW, I am a listener who rarely gives up on a book. It is now a wasted credit.

Historia
In what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels, Charles Bukowski details the long, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years, and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol, women, and the Los Angeles Public Library's collection of D. H. Lawrence, Ham on Rye offers a crude, brutal, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast's coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression.

Ridiculously stupid
Revisado: 03-31-22
Stopped reading after a few hours. A teenager's narrative on various ways to masterbate. Had to stop reading when one of the characters felt it necessary to fondle his male dog.
I'm not squeamish with the course language but grew weary with the constant focus on sexualizing women and girls.
Maybe the story has more to offer later in the book, but I've lost interest in finding out.
Was hoping for a little more historical insight to the Depression Era.

Historia
Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho in a seductive and sinister debut literary thriller. Food critic Dorothy Daniels indulges in her homicidal urges by murdering her lovers and devouring their organs in this intense, visceral, and lushly told tale of food, sex, power, and the pursuit of a very particular taste set between New York and Italy. Please Note: A Certain Hunger contains adult language and depictions of violence. Discretion is advised.

Not a novel
Revisado: 11-19-21
I usually don't write many reviews but felt strongly compelled to provide feedback to warn interested future readers.
This is NOT a novel. It is a collection of journal entries of a self absorbed egomaniac.
I, I, I...me, me me. I am a sexually irresistible predator. I can describe food in French.
I rarely give up on a book but I could not stomach any more self adulation of the protagonist. I tried to identify some sort of story line but there was NOTHING!
I am a huge fan of murder mysteries and enjoy sexual themes if there is a story.
I can't believe this book got past editors was actually published.
I cannot recommend this book to others who are actual fans of well written murder mysteries.
If you want line after line of gratuitous non-erotic, blatant porn with no intention or purpose then this book is for you.

Historia
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

Read 'story notes' first.
Revisado: 12-18-20
I would have enjoyed this book more if I would have read the 'story notes' first, because they provide context. However, they are placed at the very end of the sequence of stories. For me, without the context, the stories seemed random and pointless.

Really enjoyed this book.
Revisado: 01-15-18
This is the second book of Thomas Perry's I've listened to. I really love his style. Lots of intrigue but also gave me moments to laugh out loud at the subtle wit weaved subtly into the story, especially the ending. I also like how he builds the personalities of the characters. I look forward to the next Perry book I select to listen to.

Poor narrator
Revisado: 01-21-17
Poor narration. Very mechanical, robot-like. The only real meat of the book, or at least what I was seeking was in the last one-third of the book. The first two-thirds of the book was probably valuable for parents who need some sort of parental guidance? But, my impression was a little 'Puritan.' I didn't agree with Pat's advise on how girls can get rid of an abusive, stalker boyfriend. I work in a prison with an 85% sex offender population. I would rather teach my daughter how to be direct and unwavering by use of inflection of her voice combined with a monotone, lower pitch quality and telling him directly that she is not interested in him and that she needs him to go away and leave her alone. I might even suggest that she make a meeting place and let him believe they are going to be alone and the parents come with and stand with her to tell him to bugger off. That's not public humility, that is family unity which would more likely move him along. I had to force myself to finish the book.

No Baggage is a memoir that will resonate with adventurers and homebodies alike - it's at once a romance, a travelogue, and a bright, modern take on the age-old questions: How do you find the courage to explore beyond your comfort zone? Can you love someone without the need for commitment or any expectations for the future?

Didn't enjoy the narration
Revisado: 08-02-16
The writing seemed to be pretty good but it was difficult to pay attention because the narration was so monotone. Unlike my usual routine before purchasing an audio book, I didn't listen to the sample. Lesson learned. I'm just glad it was a Daily Deal' and didn't cost much.
I see that the author did the narration. Was that to save having to pay a professional narrator, or was it an act of vanity?
I would recommend someone read the book, but I would not recommend it as an Audible book.

I never thought I would enjoy detective stories but after getting turned on by another author who writes about a strong female detective, I decided to try a Steven King detective story. I have to admit I've not read or listened to other Steven King stories because of potential graphic violence, but I really enjoyed this. I love the subtle intellectual humor sprinkled in and the ongoing suspense.

The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it's Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies - before causing them to burst into flames. Interesting, lots of action and a fair share of descriptive violence. Science fiction/fantacy. Loved the strong female main character Harper and the teenager Ally. Loved the course language of the main female characters as well. Kinda went on and on but remained interesting. Couldn't stop listening.
