Historia
When the aliens welcome them with open arms—and tentacles—Levi is wary. No strangers are that nice. Especially not seven-foot-tall teal dudes with more "feelers" than you can shake a stick at. But Levi's suspicion fades when the smoldering alien Zat'tor takes an unusual interest in him. He never got this much attention back on his own planet, and no human man ever made his heart flutter the way Zat'tor does. Amid their budding relationship, Levi discovers the shock of his life. Can he ever return to Earth? But more importantly, does he even want to?

almost perfect monster romance
Revisado: 05-18-24
a few story quirks, probably a relic of it being such a short book, but it's a perfect monster romance, finally. everything else is shifter nonsense, or the aliens are just oddly colored humans. this is a straight up monster, snout, scales, claws and more. thank you.

moves slow, but it's starting to finally pay off
Revisado: 04-02-24
it's really hard to rate this book honestly. I was ready to go three stars. the promise of the premise was that I'd get to see Samazar become a dragon. that's what I wanted since book one and have been dying to see it happen soon enough that I get to revel and enjoy it before the series ends; to see him rule over his tribe as a dragon, bully the humans, and so on.
I've felt that the series, and this book especially, has dragged it's feet on letting him accomplish his dreams. even now, he doesn't evolve again until the very,*very* end, and even then it's not a full dragon. -1 star. but at least it's dragon shaped, if only considered a "Wyrm". + .5.
then, when he's finally a large, massive, quadrupedal reptile, he has to unlock a damn shaoeshifting ability, something to hide his "dragon" do he can keep being a draconian in public. -1 Star. again, at least it's expressed that it's not his real body, and he'll have to switch back, hopefully more often as the gets used to it (why does a dragon trapped in the wrong body need to get used to being Large and quadrupedal anyway?).
still, 3.5 stars. it's enjoyable but it's taking too long to pay off

content warning: infanticide
Revisado: 03-23-24
as much as I love the series and the world, and while this book is mostly great, wonderful characters that I'm happy I saw, there are a few terrible premises.
the first being infanticide. I'm sure the author thought it was fine because it's "only dragons", or thinks they're really clever because this crime means the stakes are high, but no, it's a low fucking shot that should hang remained taboo.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

great world, decent story, dragons are too minor, narrator could do better
Revisado: 02-15-24
overall, I really enjoyed this book. there were a few rough patches story what, such as the main character being such a pansy when it comes to self defense.
the Dragon Rider bits were a little tropey, such as the bond being magical, the dragons only talking psychicly to their riders, and so on, but at least the dragons were in charge and didn't let the humans fuck with them, being at liberty to kill any cadet they wanted for various reasons. that's much better than them being subjugated or objectified. I really wish they could speak though, and they needed a bigger role overall.
the narrator doesn't sound sick, as other people have claimed in reviews, but there were definitely several sniffles and large inhales or swallows, but to me they felt like normal sounds someone makes when reading aloud for a long time, it's just that most other professional readers manage to edit that all out. either she didn't, or she was sloppy and missed a bunch.

almost perfect
Revisado: 01-23-24
finally, some good monster f*ucker romance/erotica. everything I've tried before has been shifter romance, which is absolutely not good though. The Duskwalker here is properly alien in mind and monstrous in body. I love it.
it could only have been more perfect if it was mlm, as I'm a gay male desperate for some good monster xenoromance, but alas~

story, world, and Nico are amazing, but one fear...
Revisado: 12-16-23
this is one of the best dragon book series I've ever read. most have the dragon written in a way that makes them seem almost human, in mannerisms or ethics or whatever, a "human in a dragon suit" sort of thing, but Nico is very obviously not human, in the way he thinks and acts, and it is very refreshing.
even though he has to be hidden away in human form for most of the book, it's forgivable because he doesn't act completely human still, and at times he yearns to be in his true form, saying he "feels cramped", and whatnot.
the story is a great power fantasy, and feels great to read and imagine a powerful dragon flexing on everyone.
my one fear comes with Cammy. she's an ok partner for Nico, but I hate how lovey dovey and jealous she gets. I would like to see Nico get close to another dragon but I feel she won't allow that.
it might not be that bad if I got the feeling she would become a dragon for him, but at one point she mentions that she likes his human form better, and so I worry the author might put Nico on a path of "being human ain't so bad" so that he can be with her if he eventually falls for her. I'd hate that

one of the few good dragon shifter books
Revisado: 10-14-23
I tend to dislike books where the dragon has a human form. In my quest to find more novels with dragons as the main character, most of the time a shapeshifting book comes across as lazy or lackluster. the "dragon" is usually human for 99% of it and is only a "dragon" in name, or acts so much like a natural human anyway that he might as well have been one from the beginning.
this book however, I felt did the shapeshifting right. Nico sees the world as a dragon, and it's unique and refreshing. the shapechange is important to the story, and there's enough dragon habits to be satisfying.
my hope going forward is that Nico spends more time in his real form as the need to keep it a secret wanes.
my fear is that the author tries to make him think that the human way is better, and that he might rescind his dragon heritage. that fear does not seem very founded as of this books ending, but it's always there

twilight but with dragons (kinda)
Revisado: 11-15-22
it's like twilight in the sense that the female lead has two guys from different worlds that she's into and are into her. unfortunately, like in twilight I'm pretty sure she's going to make the wrong choice.
I understand the need for dragons to keep their forms secret to hide in the real world, but I still disdain shifting when used improperly or is overdone. spoilers to follow, but after the human love interest discovers Ember is a dragon, and that have their confrontation, she shifts to human to talk with him when she really should have just stayed dragon. the author seems keen on forcing the dragon MC into a human role and I hate that.
personal preference aside, it seems to be your usual enemy to lover story, with the twist of it being dragon and slayer, with a third love interest thrown in for some unknown reason at this point (even if I like him, Cobalt, better). it's got a few good scenes sprinkled in, but a lot of it is a little cheesy, but expected.

some good gnoll bois
Revisado: 09-17-22
this book was overall very enjoyable! about time we got something from the point of view of some gnolls(at least what I've seen). granted, it's a litrpg with a human player in a gnoll body, but still. the characters are generally great and the story is compelling.
if I had to fault it for something (which I feel makes reviews more believable) it would be that some characters had a couple of flip flops moments, and that the rest of the gnoll npcs act surprisingly human sometimes
as for the narration, it was pretty great, I loved some of the voices, but the editing needed another pass. many times I noticed a line being repeated.

decent
Revisado: 09-10-22
first, a content warning. there's some questionable content stuff going on, from forceful dubious consent to borderline hypnotic scent. personally, I think it's fine for fiction, but others might not.
my biggest complaint is that the book seems full of half measures. from the snakes being half human, flat faced and all that, when I think it would have been much better as full serpent nagas, complete with snouts, to the main Naga and human character seemingly flip flopping constantly. the female starts wanting out, to get away from the Naga, but then a few pages later feels like she owes him? similarly, varushka (forgive my spelling,I only did the audio book) is aggressive, possessive, and kind of r@pey, but then suddenly gets very caring and wants her happy and comfortable? I personally feel like the author would of done better leaning fully into the monster romance.
I also enjoyed Elizabeth's version of varushka's voice better, sounded more alien, which made it easier to imagine as a full non-human Naga.
