Historia
Through no fault of his own, the once human Jim Eckert had become a dragon. Unfortunately, his beloved Angie had remained human. But in this magical land anything could happen. To make matter worse, Angie had been taken prisoner by an evil dragon and was held captive in the impenetrable Loathly Tower. So in this land where humans were edible and beasts were magical - where spells worked and logic didn't-- Jim Eckert had a big, strange problem.

Lovely series I’m now, sadly, finishing
Revisado: 02-28-23
I just began this book, again, 4 weeks ago as I’d tried several times and not enjoyed the current day story. I tried again and stuck it out. Each book in the series has become richer. For simple story telling with an underlying goodness, it is up there with LOR. In this current time of ugly struggle to find some peace for those who seek simple kindness, to retreat into these books has been heaven sent. They are simple but profound in their message, not that all is well in the bloody Middle Ages, but the one can live by a personal code of care for others, regardless. It’s a lot to ask for what might appear as a simple fantasy series, and I do love the Sanderson and Abercrombies, but these books feed my tired soul.

Historia
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

From a Louise Penny super fan: Spoilers below
Revisado: 12-01-22
I’ve read every book in this series, including the preceding book during COVID. I trusted her then to treat a subject I did not want to visit and my trust was rewarded-I loved the Madness of Crowds-it was a delicate balance that reminded me once again why I wish I lived in 3 Pines. Now comes this mess- A World of Curiosities. From the very beginning, we know it’s Sam and why no trained professionals can articulate a coherent and accepted diagnosis is nothing but a plot device? The story becomes a repetitive conversation about is it Sam or Fiona? There is too much here, some reviewers call it a woman’s book and the history of 3 Pines being founded by ostracized witches in the 1600s is interesting, as is the painting in the title. Ruth, her duck and all the beloved 3 Pines inhabitants are there, acting warm and lovely. But the other plot device, the horrid serial killer who, of course, is related to the 2 psychopathic (maybe) children is another shock, not one that assumes her readers after all these years are simply stupid, but that depicting evil in a human form in graphic detail is necessary if you had a plot that worked.
So, 2 ridiculous and offensive plot lines later, I’ve told all my friends who are avid LP readers that this book has 2 trigger warnings-an idiot plot line and gratuitous horror. I’m left rolling my eyes and disappointed after all the years I’ve spent with Gamache and company.

Historia
In The Lightkeepers, we follow Miranda, a nature photographer who travels to the Farallon Islands, an exotic and dangerous archipelago off the coast of California, for a one-year residency capturing the landscape. Her only companions are the scientists studying there, odd and quirky refugees from the mainland living in rustic conditions; they document the fish populations around the island, the bold trio of sharks called the Sisters that hunt the surrounding waters, and the overwhelming bird population....

Not for everyone but…
Revisado: 09-11-22
This book will either speak to you or it will not. Please take a chance. As an orphan who has always looked ahead and moved on, the perspective of the main character opened my heart as nothing ever has. And not through easy sentimentality but thru the harsh imagery of the unique biology of the island.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

One of the very best
Revisado: 11-11-18
Like many, I begin by saying I’ve listened to 100’s of books and never written a review. This is simply the best. Some are put off by Death as the narrator. But telling another story of Germany under Hitler’s rule requires a light in the pathos. While the characters are enchanting, it is trusting Death’s perspective that allowed me to really engage without fear of overwhelming sadness. Yep, it’s a strange perspective for a book full of delightfully strange and noble humans, their stories told by Death.
