Historia
The "absorbing and powerful" (Wall Street Journal) story of two pioneering suffragette doctors who shattered social expectations and transformed modern medicine during World War I. In No Man's Land, Wendy Moore illuminates this turbulent moment of global war and pandemic when women were, for the first time, allowed to operate on men. Their fortitude and brilliance serve as powerful reminders of what women can achieve against all odds.

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Who could survive?
Revisado: 02-04-23
An excellent and moving story of a German soldiers experience on the western front. It gives us a taste of the entire experience combat, leave, comradeship, indoctrination, supplies. It’s all here.. the hospital descriptions are vivid without being gross although it comes close. No rose colored glasses here.

A good selection of court cases
Revisado: 12-16-22
The narration is a step above monotone, and the cases he selected seems like good ones to include in this great course. My main complaint is that it falls short as far as relating these trials to lessons for us today. We get a good deal of background info on trial info, but then only a sentence or two about what the trial might teach us. Still I’m glad I bought it and listened to it.

As Don Shula and Johnny Unitas elevated the brutal game of football, the world around them clashed about Vietnam, civil rights, and sex. Collision of Wills looks at the complicated relationship between Don Shula, the league's winningest coach of all time, and his star player Johnny Unitas, and how their secret animosity fueled the Colts in an era when their losses were as memorable as their victories.

Even handed
Revisado: 12-04-22
The book looks at Both Unitas and Sheila without bias towards one or the other. It does shift several times to talk about the times in which these events took place an so is not just about football. Still it answered many questions I have always had n I have followed the Baltimore Colts my entire life. It was easy to lessen to n hard to put up.
Highly recommended!!

Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

The reading is excellent
Revisado: 04-04-22
Andy Serkis out does himself in the reading of this book. The story of this book is wonderful and i for one dispute that it is a children’s tail. One of my favorite books of all time is read as if performing a play by Mr. Serkis, an a great play at that! Even if you have read The Hobbit several times as I have purchase this audio version just to hear Mr. Serkis read it!
The movie does not come close to doing this book justice!

Here are the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, stylishly retold by Stephen Fry. The legendary writer, actor, and comedian breathes life into ancient tales, from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire, and transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Greek mythology for everyone
Revisado: 11-30-21
The book consist of stories from Greek mythology written in a humorous way so they are easy to understand.
The author does an excellent reading of his book with just the right inflections to add delightfully to the story. Since he is reading the stories you don’t have to worry about name pronunciation, which was always a hangup for me.
This book and reading are highly recommended!

Historia
From the perilous ocean crossing to the shared bounty of the first Thanksgiving, the Pilgrim settlement of New England has become enshrined as our most sacred national myth. Yet, as best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals in his spellbinding new book, the true story of the Pilgrims is much more than the well-known tale of piety and sacrifice; it is a 55-year epic that is at once tragic, heroic, exhilarating, and profound.

Historia
In The March of Folly, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning historian Barbara Tuchman tackles the pervasive presence of folly in governments through the ages. Defining folly as the pursuit by governments of policies contrary to their own interests, despite the availability of feasible alternatives, Tuchman details four decisive turning points in history that illustrate the very heights of folly in government.

Slow start
Revisado: 10-23-21
The book starts right in action so you have no idea who is who and what is what. It’s isn’t until chapter 4 and I finally figured out which characters were which and what some of the terms commonly used meant. If you’re OK with this and you like werewolf mystery stories then this is your book.

A day in the life
Revisado: 10-20-21
The book covers a single day in this veterinarians life with the exception that there is plenty of background material. It is not a comedy per se although there are humorous parts. it does contain Enough biology to make some parts a tad squeamish. I believe the Reader did About as good a job as could be hoped for, Maybe not a five that I have given, but they don’t have 4 1/2.
