Historia
By day, Maeve Fly works at the happiest place in the world as every child’s favorite ice princess. By the neon night glow of the Sunset Strip, Maeve haunts the dive bars with a drink in one hand and a book in the other, imitating her misanthropic literary heroes. But when Gideon Green—her best friend’s brother—moves to town, he awakens something dangerous within her, and the world she knows suddenly shifts beneath her feet. Untethered, Maeve ditches her discontented act and tries on a new persona.

Juvenile try hard.
Revisado: 08-25-23
I need to stop getting book recommendations from TikTok. I greatly enjoy horror and splatterpunk, but this book is just trying way too hard. Very unrealistic characters. Dumb tropes. Edgy and cringy.

Historia
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Why the hype?
Revisado: 08-23-23
I am a massive horror fan, and I could not finish this. The book feels like it is trying too hard to prove itself. Poor writing. Incredibly unrealistic and cringy main character. Really dumb dialog. I don't understand how this book is a Bram Stoker award winner.

Historia
High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fiancée isn't just mumbling in her sleep—she's whispering back.

Entry-level, young adult horror.
Revisado: 01-22-23
Are you wanting to read something with a little more of an edge after finishing a few Goosebumps books? Then this book is for you. A nice and light introduction to what bad horror tropes are and how frequently they can be used for minimal effect.
Are you a veteran horror fan looking for something new and gutteral? Something that sticks with you for days? Something along the lines of Barker, Triana, Ketchum, Cutter, or even King? Then you should probably skip this one, trust me. The social media recommendations are completely wrong about this one.

Try-hard hype.
Revisado: 09-23-22
Didn't quite meet the hype I have seen online. sure it was gross, but it didn't have much of a narrative. The characters are too cringy to be believable.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Promising first half.
Revisado: 08-15-22
The second half of this book feels like a chore. I don't care about the characters enough to stay completely committed to the story. It has lost my attention. I enjoyed the creeping darkness of the first half of the book, but after that, it started to feel like the author was trying too hard to keep it going.
The narration was good.

Presently
Revisado: 07-11-22
The word "presently" is used so many times and it became really annoying. Presently, the book may be the catalyst for cosmic horror, but, presently, W.H.H. could have taken some notes from an editor.
Presently, the audio is great.
