Historia
Newly crowned as king, Keris has watched, powerless, as his forbidden relationship with Zarrah is revealed. But when Zarrah is imprisoned by the empress, Keris knows there is only one way to save her: to ally with the kingdom he nearly destroyed. Imprisoned on the dreaded Devil’s Island, Zarrah faces two choices: prove her loyalty to the empress who condemned her or die a traitor. Yet as she struggles to survive among violent prisoners, Zarrah uncovers a third path: a rebellion to overthrow tyranny entwined with a destiny she must fight to claim.

I liked Oron's and Laura's story better, but this one was very good too.
I thought the conclusion fit the characters very well.

Historia
Catherine Morland reads tales of Gothic romance, yet leads a country life in Wiltshire. When she travels to Bath, she meets and falls in love with Henry Tilney. She is invited by his sister and father to stay at Northanger Abbey, where she meets all the trappings of Gothic horror that she has read about. Fortunately, she has her own good sense and irresistible but unsentimental hero, Henry Tilney.

It was unpublished by the Author for a reason
Revisado: 06-09-24
So far this is my least favorite Austin novel and learning this was the first written and published after her death I can see why it was unpublished.
For those who published it, I feel they failed to realized that parts were notes to self to fix. Though we don't know why she didn’t publish or finish the novel, it's obvious the uneveness of the story, the quick resolve of the plot, and the very cardboard characters that are not integrated as they should be.
I also feel this was a first attempt at Sense and Sensibility since many of the names are the same.
The narrator did the best she could with the material, but some of the voices grated on me.

kept me going
Revisado: 06-01-24
I had read this book in the early 20aughts, and I didn’t remember much of it and remembered not being able to visualize the Miswriths or how Richard takes down the towers. Hearing it made it a little better.
There was a lot and I mean a lot of repetition especially in the middle. It got a little annoying. However, I still enjoyed the book and the narrator was good.

middle takes a bit too long
Revisado: 02-20-24
I read this book about twenty years ago when the TV show came out, and it was my first foray into epic, high fantasy.
I enjoyed the audiobook. The narrator was easy to listen to and he did a good job at different voices. Those characters near D'Hara sounded very southern, but the distinct character voices helped with the large cast.
The middle was a bit long, one or two too many obstacles.
still a good book. I'll continue listening to the series. I had read half of it when I needed a break.

Historia
In this Audible Exclusive production, Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) narrates one of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Sense and Sensibility. In this timeless tale of misguided romance and heartbreak, two teenage heroines must overcome the pitfalls of Georgian England’s high society in order to achieve the love and happiness they seek. The admiration that Pike has for Austen’s work is shown clearly through this passionate delivery of Austen’s first published novel.

One of my new favorites.
Revisado: 10-11-23
Until about 3 years ago the only Jane Austin I'd read was, of course, Pride and prejudice. Now I've read 3, this is my second favorite.
I enjoyed the story and the ending more than I liked Emma.
My issue with it was the stressy messy ending. The last chapters of the 3 books I've read are always a brief future look at everyone in the book. I don't know if it was because there were so many characters or what, but this one seemed very rushed. Also, with Wilaby I felt she undermined some of what was said in earlier chapters since Mrs. Smith forgives him and he could be happy and rich, but she established that Marianne would not have been happy knowing Eliza was out there.

A soldier raised as heir to an empire, Zarrah is motivated by two truths. The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves. The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.

I liked it better than the first duoligy
Revisado: 07-13-23
I liked Karis and Zara. Both had flaws and had to overcome their ideas of the future, but they accepted new information quicker and didn't just fall back on 'I was raised this way.'
I need a bit of a break, but I will probably read the next instalment in a couple of months.

A good listen and interesting story
Revisado: 01-02-23
I really enjoyed this story. I've been reading/listening to a lot of detective/mystery stories lately because I'm trying to get the pacing and story down. This one was a first time read/listen so I didn't know what to expect.
The story was interesting and handled sexual assault very well. Leila is always affected by it, she even says it's no ot something you ever get over; however, she hasn't let it be her defining moment. I also liked the side opinions of sexual assault were there not glorified or accepted, but you know people in real life think that way. The witness to one of the murder victims of "well if you're going to act like that, something bad will happen to you." or the "Well it didn't ruin your life you went to law school, so you got over it. Right."
I would have liked more of the detective Niki's POV but this really was Leila's and Grady's story so I get it, but I liked her perspective.

The leaps of logic
Revisado: 09-20-22
except for the last story, the rest of the stories had such leaps of logic it was mind blowing. Holmes is supposed to be hyper aware and has paranormal attention to detail and deduction skills, and in the Original stories there is always a few pages with all the evidence presented and that's what 3 of the 4 new stories lacked. Yes, Taylor has space for it, but the evidence he presents doesn't fit what he's found.
spoiler: How would he know there were 14 cars on the train when there were always 13?
Comberbatch did well as Watson and he performed very well.

Meandered like crazy
Revisado: 09-12-22
Being the last book in the first Trilogy, I expected more of the threads to wrap up. What was a White Ship. why did the captain say "They brought me one."
It was a long journey and the final battle was rushed. Even Regale's downfall was short and unsatisfying.
I would have liked a little more of the battle and less of the travel to the Elderlings. Like take one or three challenges from the journey to the quarry and have more of the battle.
