Weirdest narration ever. Good info though.

Maybe buy the hard copy of this one. Good info in it. But the narrator’s manner of speaking is so bizarre. It’s almost like he is drunk, just learned how to read, and also manages to have a Northeastern accent, a Midwestern accent, and a Southern accent all at the same time. Very distracting and hard to follow in places.

This is a pretty good one! So many books in this genre are garbage. He’s specific and has good info.

Decent-ish book. Sad to hear about the author.

After learning that the author has been arrested for child abuse, and previously for domestic violence, I regret buying this book. In terms of the quality of the content, it was OK nothing extraordinary or that I haven’t heard before.

so I love this genre, and the plot of this book was good and the characters were interesting, but man it was written in the most annoying possible way – so many unnecessary and repetitive adjectives and overwrought cheesy dialogue. It’s almost like it was written by an amateur writer, except that the plot was so good. Maybe the author had a bad editor or something. The narrator was pretty good.

The substance here is very light. Nothing most people don’t already know. Also it’s weird and insulting that the author assumes the reader is “the man of the house” and Christian and a Trump supporter. Ick! There’s also some bad advice in here such as mustard on wounds (doctors do not recommend that) and using a shipping container to create an underground bunker (not safe). The narrator has a nice voice and the topic is important, but those are the only two positive things about the book.

excellent book, thoroughly researched, and I like how she weaved in the history lessons with the scenario to keep it engaging. Only critique would be that sometimes it’s a little extra wordy or melodramatic, throwing in some obvious statements that seemed unnecessary or repetitive, for emotional effect I guess. but that’s a minor issue and I definitely recommend this book to anyone. Well, maybe not somebody with a severe anxiety disorder!

I keep giving this series a chance bc I love the genre and I actually like the narrator. And unlike some other critiques I’ve read, I don’t think it’s poorly written from a mechanical perspective. But the amount of misogyny in here is so much that it’s almost like an intentional comedic parody of an insecure man looking to be a hero who rescues emotional and/or clueless women and fights the libs. It’s on the borderline of being funny how blatant it is. I’m not normally one who notices undertones of sexism but this book is dripping with overtones. There’s deeply insecure masculinity throughout. A one sentence summary of the series could be: “Let me get my guns, man up, and explain to the weak, ignorant ladies, and especially the liberal ladies and the liberal sissy men without guns, that it’s a dangerous world, and they’re wildly naive and emotional.” I’m sure there’s still a target audience for that kind of noise (maybe if you love FoxNews propaganda and you’re also bitter at the women in your life), but it’s pretty embarrassing to read for the rest of us. It’s also disappointing because there’s such an important (gender neutral) message to actually send to our society about self sufficiency and preparedness.

I wanted to like this book but… ugh. First though, the good: (1) Fascinating topic/genre. (2) Some decent advice baked into the story about preparedness. (3) Narrator did a great job! and (4) The author writes well from a technical perspective. But the amount of Republican propaganda in here,.. Blah. i’m not even a Democrat; I’m a moderate independent, but this book has a LOT of the whiny ranting (and one sided, largely uniformed, mischaracterizations of the other side of issues) that you might hear on Fox News (or perhaps MSNBC for that matter). Snowflake partisanship, basically. The characterization of liberals in law school and in the practice of law, as one example, is very exaggerated and inaccurate. (Source: I’m a moderate lawyer who went to a law school like the one he describes.) I guess the propaganda is red meat bait for the target audience. Also, all the masculinity-obsessed talk of “manning up” “protecting your wife” “not being a sissy” “growing a pair” etc gave me secondhand embarrassed for the author. There’s nothing inherently masculine (or feminine) about being prepared, being strong, and wanting to protect those you love, but you wouldn’t know that from this book. Anyway, I really wanted to like this series more than the One Second After series, and the narrator is at least better, and the writing itself is better. But the content is somehow even more preachy and eyeroll worthy than the long political rants scattered throughout the One Second After series.

Although he has a cool voice, the narrator is a major over-actor, which is distracting and hard to listen to. The story is good though. Read the others in the series first though.
