Male narrator is terrible
Revisado: 07-10-22
I found the premise of the first book interesting and decided to keep going with the series. Unfortunately, they added in second narrator ti read the male protagonist’s point of view. The narrator has an unusual inflection style that places emphasis on certain words, sometimes making it difficult to make sense of the sentence. The narrator also mispronounced his own character’s name! I don’t actually care how it is pronounced, as long as the narrator is consistent. The bad narration made it really hard to get into the story.

A complete crime fiction box set! Homicide detective Thomas Prescott may be retired—but a serial killer, a high-profile murder, an ill-fated cruise, and a chilling small-town crime add more than enough excitement to his hard-earned rest. This collection includes the first four books: Unforeseen, Gray Matter, The Afrikaans, and Show Me.

Misogynistic protagonist
Revisado: 04-05-21
I tried to give this a really fair shot, and listened for about 2 hours before I just had to quit. I competent disagree with other reviews that the protagonist is funny— the author is just trying WAY too hard. I enjoy the occasional zinger or pun as much as the next person, but in this book it is every. single. sentence. In addition, the main character comments on the sex appeal of every woman in the book. The protagonist comes across as a skeezy misogynistic uncle who thinks he’s cool when he’s not. The plot showed some signs that it could be interesting, but I had to quit after a couple of hours. I’m glad this was included in my subscription and that I didn’t pay for it.

Historia
Recently engaged and deeply ensconced in her third year of surgical residency in Chicago, Emily Hartford gets a shock when she is called home to Freeport, Michigan, the small town she fled a decade ago after the death of her mother. Her estranged father, the local medical examiner, has had a massive heart attack. At the hospital, she finds her father in near total denial of the seriousness of his condition. He insists that the best thing Emily can do to help him is to take on the autopsy of a senator's teen daughter whose sudden, unexplained death has just rocked the sleepy town.

Lacks basic editing
Revisado: 04-05-21
I found the overall subplot of this book trite (city girl travels back home to the country and loses/forgets her ambition to rekindle romance with high school boyfriend). I put up with that to find out whodunnit. However, I was constantly annoyed by the complete lack of basic editing or any type of background research. Within the fist chapter the surgeon scrubs, puts on a gown and gloves, and THEN ties a mask to her face?? College full ride scholarships that are decided in a one light rural town?? A random retired FBI agent who is able to do complex forensic analysis in her kitchen?? For a book about medicine, horses, and police work, this book fails get even the most basic details right. You’d think the author editor would have at least had a couple of people read it to catch these egregious errors. I gave it more than 1 star, because I stuck with it until the end, but I agree with other reviewers that the ending was abrupt and not satisfying.
