Historia
For too long the Religious Right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. In her deeply reported investigation, Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: this is a political movement that seeks to gain power and to impose its vision on all of society. America’s religious nationalists aren’t just fighting a culture war, they are waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy.

Informative book, atrociously read
Revisado: 01-07-24
I had not realized just how deeply the religious right has insinuated itself into all aspects of the US government and society. And that was BEFORE the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade (among other right wing decisions).
I learned a great deal from the contents of the book. But the reader does an enormous disservice to both the author and the listeners. She seems simply to be reading words, without any understanding of their meaning or context. She mispronounces words as important, and as commonly used, as “governance” and “sovereignty”; she renders Title X as “Title Ex” instead of “Title Ten”; she uses strange inflections and verbal emphases that distort or obscure the meanings of sentences. And so on and so on.
I hope she does not return as a reader of any other serious and important works.

Historia
Beyond the garden wall lies a wealth of cultivated plants, each with a unique tale to tell. In The Grove, award-winning writer and head gardener Ben Dark reveals the remarkable secrets of 20 commonly found species—including the rose, wisteria, buddleja, box and the tulip—encountered in the front gardens of one London street over the course of year.

Not your everyday gardening book…

A lovely book
Revisado: 05-01-22
I can think of no more enjoyable way to spend a spring (or summer or fall) morning than puttering around in my garden while listening to the charming Ben Dark. His writing is witty and erudite, and his voice is so soothing I could happily listen to him read the phone book (if phone books still existed). With every podcast episode, and now with The Grove, Ben Dark has helped me become a better-educated, and more knowledgeable, gardener.
