Hope and Love powers the will to live
Revisado: 07-08-24
I don't get glued to listening to many stories these days, but this one had me stuck until it was finished!
This woman spy was surviving solely on her will to live through the hope to see her children again and a new love growing.
Sad that the love didn't end the way I hoped, but that's life, I guess. Nothing is quite as it seems it should be.

Historia
What is a “normal family,” and how do you go about making one? Chrysta Bilton’s magnetic, larger-than-life mother, Debra, yearned to have a child, but as a single gay woman in 1980s California, she had few options. Until one day, while getting her hair done in a Beverly Hills salon, she met a man and instantly knew he was the one she’d been looking for. Beautiful, athletic, artistic, and from a well-to-do family, Jeffrey Harrison appeared to be Debra’s ideal sperm donor.

A serious topic with lots of humor
Revisado: 01-21-24
I found myself laughing at the author and narrator's story telling of serious points in the story. If I had written it, people would probably cry at those points, but Chrysta wrote her story, full of hurt and shame in a humorous way. She details her mother's interesting character in a way that does not bring shame to her family - despite the fact that during the time period this takes place in, her mother and her father's way of life was much less socially acceptable than it is today.
I also loved the ending of the book! It is the perfect way to end it!
I highly recommend this story and audiobook! It's one of the best audiobooks I've listened to!

detailed descriptions - not for young ears
Revisado: 01-20-24
This story made my heart break. Tressa blamed herself for all the pain her experience caused her family, and became a drug addict as a result. I was able to feel her pain from her descriptions, and can understand her feelings and why she turned to drugs. Amazing that she is fighting for herself and wants to make her daughter proud of her one day!
I'd like to encourage her to believe in herself and keep working towards bettering her life. it's not her fault she was taken advantage of at such a young age and that her parents were not model citizens. we are all human, and I think anyone who has experienced a life like that would do anything to try to numb the hurtful feelings, hatred, and anger she has experienced in her short life time.
It will be a struggle for the rest of her life, but with a great support group, she can have a great life!
The narrator of this story did a very good job, I felt like I was experiencing everything Tressa experienced as the story was read. I highly recommend this read, especially if you need a wake up call to the blessings that have been bestowed upon you and your life.

Historia
Jacqueline Saper, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, was born in Tehran to Iranian and British parents. At 18 she witnessed the civil unrest of the 1979 Iranian revolution and continued to live in the Islamic Republic during its most volatile times, including the Iran-Iraq War. In a deeply intimate and personal story, Saper recounts her privileged childhood in prerevolutionary Iran and how she gradually became aware of the paradoxes in her life and community - primarily the disparate religions and cultures.

Great story, but very slow start
Revisado: 01-13-23
The story was great, but had a slow start. I don't know who the targeted audience was for this story, but, as an American, I found the start slow. I knew the story would have a turning point that would get me hooked, but it took much longer than normal.
The beginning of the story starts off by telling a lot of details about a life style most Americans know and understand. I think it would have been better if the beginning would briefly tell how great life was before the change, or describe the culture and religion more than the normal day to day life. Then after a short beginning chapter dive into where all things began to change.
It would have been even better if details were given so we can see the buildings and people, even the styles of the day, so we readers and listeners can feel the experience ourselves rather than get a history book lesson from it.
overall, the story is great, but I honestly think a lot more work is needed to make it truly phenomenal.

Amazing Details and Great Narrator
Revisado: 01-12-23
This is on my top 5 list of historical books I've ever read or listened to (and I've read and listened to hundreds!)
Let's just start with the storyline...It's amazing! I love how the author seamlessly switched characters views without making me confused as to whose mind I was in at the moment. Next, the storyline of both characters was very well put together with a clear background story to set the tone for the rest of the story! Next, the detailed descriptions of the events painted a very clear picture (or more like physical experience), in my mind. I literally felt like I was there breathing in the dust, or scooping dirt to find missing items, etc! When characters switched, I became them! I felt Loraida's anger towards her mother, and was right there with her wanting to do the same things as her, but I also felt like I was Elsa when she was telling her side of the story (except in parts where I severely disagreed with her thinking, and couldn't, for the life of me, think her thoughts no matter how hard I tried to). Finally, I loved that I finally found a story that tells about the experience of a dust bowl survivor, farm worker, union member, and a woman to boot! All these things put together made the story so amazing!
I know, the timeline isn't completely accurate to real events, but in my opinion, as long as it was in the right Era, that is good enough for me. Events and how they impacted people is far more important than having the exact dates right!
To make the listen even better is the fact of the narrator! A narrator who designated time to research pronunciations and contact the author to make sure she got it right is the narrator I want to listen to! She also did a phenomenal job switching voices between characters without causing any hiccups in the overall narration! I was able to clearly dissifer between characters by their voices with no confusion whatsoever!
I give this book 10 out of 5 stars and the narration the same! will definitely look for more books written and narrated by these 2 wonderful ladies!

When Sandra Leigh was seven years old, she fell into the role of protector of her mother and three younger siblings. One winter night, she ushered her mother out of the house during one of her father’s tirades, and then snuck her back into the dark home through a window. Sandra was used to events like these; what she wasn’t used to were the mountains and nature surrounding her new home in West Virginia.

Narrator made it hard to stop listening!
Revisado: 09-15-22
My ears were GLUED to the narrators words! I had to listen until late at night, and even had a hard time turning it off to go to work!
I had little sleep as I listened to this story! I slept maybe 4 or 5 hrs a night during most of the length of this story. Went to bed late and got up early to listen!
I loved the ending! So happy Sandra found the closure she needed to! Many people would be unable to forgive their parents for this, but she was able to! She had a tender heart and was very forgiving to her harsh father and struggling mother. Happy to hear that they all found the happiness they were searching for!

"You will be a son, my daughter." With these stunning words Ukmina learned that she was to spend her childhood as a boy. In Afghanistan there is a widespread practice of girls dressing as boys to play the role of a son. These children are called bacha posh: literally "girls dressed as boys." This practice offers families the freedom to allow their child to shop and work - and in some cases, it saves them from the disgrace of not having a male heir. But in adolescence, religion restores the natural law.

Narrator did a very good job! Amazing story of courage and women standing up for themselves in a place where they are mistreated so badly!
Gave me courage to continue doing what is right despite others trying to convince me otherwise!
Story was well told and narrator did a wonderful job! She told it with great enthusiasm and enunciated the correct words to make us understand it better! Many narrators don't do this, so I HIGHLY recommend listening!

ok
Revisado: 08-17-22
This story was ok. Just ok. Not exceptional, but not horrible.
Narrator did an ok job, but his voice was hard for me to listen to for long periods of time. I listened to it in bits and pieces over several months. Finally finished it.
I listened to this one for free, otherwise I would have asked for my money back a long time ago.
I'm sure the story would be much more entertaining if I read it myself, some books are that way.
