Historia
Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Still funny more than a decade later
Revisado: 01-15-25
I listened to this when it first came out and thought it was hilarious. Just listened again over ten years later and laughed until I cried. At age 40 now, I appreciate her jokes on a whole new level. Tina Fey writes and narrates brilliantly as she shares funny and profound professional and personal experiences that shaped her, and shares insights on what surviving in the world as a woman means. I will continue to return to this book for years to come when I need a laugh.

Historia
Rachel panicked as she lay awake on the first night of her year-long honeymoon—a backpacking trip around the world. Though young and in love, she wasn’t sure she actually believed in marriage, let alone the lofty Mormon ideal of eternal marriage. This unconventional honeymoon felt like a brief reprieve from the crushing expectations for a Mormon bride. But this trip also offered opportunities: the chance to study wedding traditions in other cultures and the space to confront what marriage—including her own—meant to her.

Did what it sought to do
Revisado: 10-02-24
This book had the feel of an author's first published work, but overall I enjoyed it. I appreciated witnessing the author work through her struggles and draw her own conclusions about what marriage means to her and acknowledge what had shaped her ideas. I think more and more people of faith are going to need to go through this struggle of examining marriage, as culture continues to shift in light of living in an age of individualism and changing societal ideas about "traditional" marriage. I suppose I'm trying to say it feels timely. I appreciated the author's honesty about the good, the bad, and the ugly of marriage and what it means to be an imperfect human in an ideally forever relationship. I have personally been married 18 years, and it still resonated with me. I hope she continues to write--I look forward to seeing what she does next.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Beautiful story telling
Revisado: 05-10-24
Mr. McBride weaves an incredible, intricate story with meaningful theme development, interesting characters, and a plot that moves along like a real page-turner. He manages to somehow both break your heart with terrible truths, and also leave you feeling full of hope in humanity. The narration was impeccable. This is my first read by this author and I plan to read the rest of his writing after how much I enjoyed and was moved by this book.

Historia
Faith Matters offers an expansive view of the Restored Gospel, thoughtful exploration of big and sometimes thorny questions, and a platform that encourages deeper engagement with our faith and our world. We focus on the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) tradition, but believe we have much to learn from other traditions and fully embrace those of other beliefs.

Something for everyone
Revisado: 03-04-24
I have been listening for about a year now and cannot say enough how much I appreciate this podcast. It tackles a wide variety of sometimes difficult faith topics with sensitivity and nuance, and even humor, and it has helped me examine my own faith, both its strengths and weaknesses, and why I choose to believe. The quality of guests interviewed is tremendous--I learn something new every time I listen. I frequently find myself wanting to have my own conversations with people about the ideas shared on this podcast. I feel that this podcast has something for everyone, no matter where they are on their faith journey, or what their faith tradition.

Historia
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Would not recommend reading
Revisado: 06-12-23
This was a bubblegum book pretending to be woke. Nothing compelling or interesting, poor character development, story line almost nonexistent, hardly funny at all. I've never read this author before and won't again.

Historia
In medical school, Paul Farmer found his life’s calling: to cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. Tracy Kidder’s magnificent account shows how one person can make a difference in solving global health problems through a clear-eyed understanding of the interaction of politics, wealth, social systems, and disease. Profound, Mountains Beyond Mountains takes us from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia as Farmer changes people’s minds through his dedication to the philosophy that “the only real nation is humanity.”

Top 10 among all the books I've ever read
Revisado: 06-09-22
I found Dr. Farmer's story phenomenally inspiring and Tracy Kidder's writing extremely engaging (which is certainly not always the case with nonfiction writing). The narration was spot on. I'm a nurse and cannot adequately tell you how this book moved me. I absolutely recommend it if you're looking for a read that will both entertain, and leave you thinking about what it means to be a part of humanity and marveling at the good that a single determined individual can do.
