Gentle kindness
Revisado: 02-13-25
Before I got into the story properly, the aspect that carried me into the story was the narrator’s voice. The beautiful lilt and small expressions voiced brought the characters to life, and more than that, feels that the voice could be the actual voice of the author, spreading in front of me story I couldn’t walk away from, a story that I will carry in my heart.
I love the exploration of the characters interacting with each other while themselves exploring and developing their minds and talents.
The gentle pace is as calming and soul-lifting as floating on a boat on a leaf canopied stream. Being a part of the journey as the characters’ lives intertwine with each other, as the bookshop takes blossoming root with each new person, as it becomes a refuge for the people that shape the story, is a balm to my soul.
I’m sure this will be a book I’ll return to often.

What a roller-coaster of a story!
I listened to all three books in succession and could barely breathe with the telling of the story of this unexpected landing of unwitting time travellers.
It was a harsh time in which to land, that’s for sure, but they wouldn’t have succeeded in surviving without the friendly group of native people they came across.
I hope the final, untold, part of this story is the modern day retelling of what happened to the descendants.
I loved this book, with its vivid and accurate depictions of the world in 1720, with its clean air and rank odours!
Be transported, and listen to this series of books.

What a great concept for a series of stores!
The first and third felt like great hope for a good end, the first was a little hard to consider liking Michael Hollister, but one can’t help but cheer him on.
I could listen to a town-full of these stores!

Wth? Wish I’d not started it.
Revisado: 01-03-25
I really did not like the way this story was written. The story itself could be good, as it’s gripping and full of puzzling aspects to follow…but it took a looong time to get to the point. The before and after dance was a little confusing at first , but ok, got into the rhythm, but then it just dragged on! And the actual culprit is one you’d never guess.
And as for the ending….what is that?????????
Save your time, and listen to something else.

Rice with butter and soy is a taste revelation!
Revisado: 12-29-24
This book is worth every minute of your listening, not only about the interesting case in question and the maddening and complex Manako Kaji, but I love the self revelation that Rika explores, and how she becomes a strong and confident woman. Her relationships change and develop deeper meaning for both her and her circle of friends.
The toast she makes at the turkey dinner could have been summed up with “Thsnks to Manako Kaji opening a curiosity in me about food, it has also helped me find all of you!”.

Revisado: 11-27-24
The story is absorbing and intriguing, tho at times I was a little confused….the last 20 minutes in particular! So as not to give the story away , I won’t mention what details have left me puzzled. It’s a great story, tho! The voices are great for the characters, too.

My first Middlefalls listen
Revisado: 11-21-24
I really like time travel books that feel familiar, and this felt so familiar, strangely.
I appreciate the memory continuation, as it brought a depth to the story that is missed in other tales of reincarnation.
The author has totally captivated my imagination and this won’t be the last that I listen to. I loved it!

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

So easy to listen to.
Revisado: 10-24-24
When you have a story with layers of characters and their personalities, when it would seem to be a complex story to unravel and dissect the story repeatedly, you need a Tom Hanks. The story is really good, but with that voice and the face we know so well, it brings the story alive in so many ways.
There couldn’t be a better narrator for this story.

It’s worth the wait!
I enjoyed the development of the characters that we got to know over the two previous books.
It’s hard to say much without giving away the story, but the despatched grandparents and Colin are great additions to the story.
There really should be another book…..

I didn’t see that coming!
Revisado: 10-08-24
The intrigue starts from the get-go in this story. The fleshing out of the attack happens gradually, holding the listener in suspense.
To say any more is to give the plot away, so I’ll stop with a bit of advice. Increase the speed to 1.2, it holds the tension better.
