Description of most everything: people , surroundings, innermost thoughts, etc.
Revisado: 02-05-25
Well written (it is, after all, Thomas Mann). But overwrought. The decline of a 19th century merchant family. Not sure what we’re supposed to learn from this. That our efforts are futile? That vanity is for naught? That wealth is fleeting? Could have said this in half the time and space. I like Mann, but this reads as if he was paid by the word.

Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

A bit overraught. But captured the emotions of parents who have lost a child and personal lives of people whose better-known public lives are left mostly in the background.

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

I liked most everything. Towles is a superb writer and storyteller. I could personally relate to at least two of the stories. Another Amor Towles homerun.

Historia
Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson. Before they were household names, these budding legends called Sue’s Nashville apartment—lovingly dubbed the “Boar’s Nest”—home. Sue’s place was an intimate staging ground where a new breed of singer-songwriters—wounded souls, wayward upstarts—would spur each other on to tap into something bigger, realer.

Not much. If these guys were gentlemen, you’d think they’d have done more to support Sue once they became rich and famous.

Seemed like a superficial look at a woman who apparently had a great influence on country music, but died poor and unheralded.

Historia
Did you know that as of 2018, Argentina has a literacy level of 99 percent? Are you curious to find out how it achieved this? Argentina has a long and complex history. For hundreds of years, Argentina was inhabited by hunter-gatherer groups. In time, the Inca Empire rose to prominence and took over the Argentinian communities one by one. The Spanish arrived about 20 years later, bringing a new wave of invasion to the native inhabitants. The people of Argentina wouldn’t declare their independence until 1816, and after that, they faced civil war after civil war.

Experts believe that Brazil, the world's fifth largest country and its seventh largest economy, will be one of the most important global powers by the year 2030. Yet far more attention has been paid to the other rising behemoths: Russia, India, and China. Often ignored and underappreciated, Brazil, according to renowned, award-winning journalist Michael Reid, has finally begun to live up to its potential but faces important challenges before it becomes a nation of substantial global significance.

Now is the fall of his discontent, as Jason Fitger, newly appointed chair of the English Department of Payne University, takes arms against a sea of troubles, personal and institutional. His ex-wife is sleeping with the dean who must approve whatever modest initiatives he undertakes. The fearsome department secretary Fran clearly runs the show (when not taking in rescue parrots and dogs) and holds plenty of secrets she's not sharing. The lavishly funded Econ Department keeps siphoning off English's meager resources and has taken aim at its remaining office space.
