To a degree both engrossing and alarming, the story of fast food is the story of postwar America. Fast Food Nation is a groundbreaking work of investigation and cultural history that may change the way America thinks about the way it eats.

read this for school
Revisado: 03-05-25
great book. amazing book. but god damn it couldn't they have put an ounce more effort into marking chapters? the contents of the book are fantastic but reading this book for school and being told to read the 9th and 10th chapters makes no sense when the book only has 8 chapters. good book. Great book! it's just that it cost me some easy 100s and turned them into 50s and 70s

Huge waste of time!
Revisado: 12-12-20
I won't bother telling you any spoilers because you should have this book figured out within the first few chapters. It's so poorly written. Every potential cliche you can think of is used and it is ploddingly slow. About halfway through, I finally looked up spoilers on the internet and it was exactly what I had thought from chapter 2. I was actually angry with how much time I wasted waiting for this book to become something it was never going to be. I kept thinking, there's no way the author would write a book this dumb, but, spoiler alert, she did. I want my money back.

A decent tool for your teetotaling arsenal
Revisado: 06-21-20
I enjoyed learning more about the effects of alcohol on the brain and body but cringed at the author's smug attitude and preachy "my way is the only way to effectively stop drinking" tone. There are some excellent points not to be missed, but there are lots of methods to quit drinking. This book is definitely one of them if you're still searching for what works for you. It's too bad that he feels the need to self-righteously put down other methods as it distracts and potentially invalidates his own method. There is some great stuff in here, so definitely check it out, but don't give up on other methods if this book isn't your magic bullet.

Historia
When Tom is invited to the reading of a will of a great-uncle he’s never heard of, there’s no way to know what to expect. But on the long list of possible things to inherit, a travelling carnival ghost train is the very last on the list. To get his full $10 million inheritance, all Tom has to do is run the antique ride until his 18th birthday. Easy. Except for a strange caped-creep he’s never met, who’s trying to con him out of the money...and the actual ghosts and ghouls who call the ride home.

Don't expect great literature from this debut novel, but the author's narration was nice to listen to on my daily jogs. Guess it didn't hurt that she's an actress.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Devastatingly beautiful
Revisado: 10-15-18
I have a difficult time listening to books but this one came highly recommended by a friend. It did not disappoint, keeping me company on many a long walk. My only qualm was the voice for the main character. I wasn't sure it fit the personality and found it sometimes distracting or grating. The story and pacing were excellent. The few tropes peppered throughout didn't detract from the overall poetic delivery. I'm sure it will be optioned as a film.

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Was with her until she got preachy.
Revisado: 04-08-18
This book started strong with a fascinating history of infectious disease peppered with the author's humourous color commentary. But as the book went on, she started to get preachy, especially about her opinion that intentionally poor parenting choices cause disease (and she's not even a parent). Even if I agree with her, her attitude was so condescending and unobjective at times that I stopped trusting her authority of the subject and therefore stopped listening and couldn't muster the motivation to pick it up again. It's too bad.
