I want my money back.
Revisado: 11-08-23
I struggled through the entire book. This is a complex description of patchy events from times when little history was recorded. The author is clearly a devoted intellectual and devoted to his period. The book attempts to draw parallels between what it claims happened 3,000 years ago to modern times in an apparent effort to find relevance. This includes resort to tired cliches ("a perfect storm"). With respect to the intellectual devotion of the author, his sources, colleagues, and family, I do not think that the history was either compelling or relevant.

A Good Overview
Revisado: 10-20-23
This book provides a thorough overview of the conflict between the northern and southern states of America from 1861 through 1865. All of the important battles are covered and necessary background is provided. Because of the depth of the events, it is difficult to put all of the details into a book of reasonable length. This author does a nice job. If a student is looking for the complete depth, I would recommend Shelby Foote's three volumes.

Meticulously Detailed
Revisado: 10-10-23
An extremely detailed biography of a great figure in history. The book is too long. While interesting, so much detail is not necessary to convey the meaning.

Historia
It dawned on me one day that most of the scare stories in the media today are based on things that are either invisible, like CO2 and radiation, or very remote, like polar bears and coral reefs. Thus, the average person cannot observe and verify the truth of these claims for themselves. They must rely on activists, the media, politicians, and scientists - all of whom have a huge financial and/or political interest in the subject - to tell them the truth.

Very important subject
Revisado: 08-22-22
It is good to have a different perspective on the crises that we hear about from the media. The narrator has a great voice but I don't think that the performance matched the subject matter. More depth of the arguments would have been better. The cheap shots were unnecessary.

Historia
As the 18th century approached its midpoint, commercial and military competition between the European states became fierce. And whoever obtained accurate information about distant lands would hold an advantage. Were there continental landmasses in the Pacific? Was there a Northwest Passage to Japan and China? What lay in the interior of Africa? Was it possible to cross the Sahara? Where did the rivers Nile and Congo originate?

Historia
Thomas Sowell takes a tough, factual look at whether the civil rights movement has lived up to its hopes or its rhetoric. In the decades since the historic Supreme Court decision on desegregation, who has gained and who has lost? Which of the assumptions behind the civil rights revolution have stood the test of time, and which have proven to be mistaken or even catastrophic to those who were supposed to be helped?

Compelling Explanation About Race
Revisado: 02-11-22
This book explains my own personal experience in dealing with racial issues. Make no mistake about it, our government, at least in New York, applies a quota system, at least as it applies to public employment of blacks. Working for a transit agency, nearly half of our employees were black. More than three quarters of employees terminated were black and this was almost always for the same cause. The union would not contest management actions. For the occasional discrimination complaint, I would appear with a spreadsheet documenting the racial composition of our workforce that exceeded the percentage of the local population. Having exceeded our quota, we never had a problem. Our quota based on sex showed chronic underrepresentation of women, but we never had a complaint there.
Dr. Sowell has become something of a hero for me as I have consumed his work. I am grateful for both his scholarship and his courage. I agree that the best hope for the liberal advancement of people is to encourage cultures of success. This should be the social responsibility of us all. After all, Dr. King told us that his grandchildren WOULD be judged, as will all of us, including those who play the politics of race.

Historia
Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense - one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light. The book explores the incentives, the visions, and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups but for societies as a whole.

Thank you Dr. Sowell and Audible
Revisado: 01-25-22
Once again, Dr. Sowell presents an irrefutable argument against the current theories being advance on race in America. Like other authors before him, Dr. Sowell demonstrates how the popular movements on race today are both counterproductive and destructive to the fabric of our society and nation. Could this be a motivation behind the movement?
By way of criticism, this book could be a challenging read for those claiming to be the victims. It would be nice to have the case made in terms that the actual victims of racial policy might understand and hopefully act.

This is a study of how intellectuals as a class affect modern societies by shaping the climate of opinion in which official policies develop, on issues ranging from economics to law to war and peace. You will hear a withering and clear-eyed critique about (but not for) intellectuals that explores their impact on public opinion, policy, and society at large.

Life altering
Revisado: 10-24-20
Thank you Audible, for sharing this book. After listening for the first half hour, I was offended an enraged by what I considered to be racist hatred. As a lifelong progressive I was angered by the author's expressed views. So I was ready to dismiss this book as something from a Trump supporter until I researched the author and, upon finding him to be black, resolved to finish the book with an open mind. As I listened to the book it was as though the scales fell from my eyes and revealed the errors of my political philosophy. Never again will I vote for a politician that says that if you don't vote Democrat, "you ain't black." Now I recognize the true racism for what it is and regret my part in what we progressives have done to both blacks and to our nation. I now resolve to be committed to changing the failed cultures of some racial and ethnic groups and to helping America to once again become that City on a Hill that serves as a beacon to all peoples.
