Historia
Robert Fitzgerald's translation of The Odyssey has been the standard translation for more than three generations of students and poets. Macmillan Audio is delighted to publish the first ever audio edition of this classic work, the greatest of all epic poems. Fitzgerald's supple verse is ideally suited for audio, recounting the story of Odysseus' long journey back to his wife and home after the Trojan War. Homer's tale of love, adventure, food and drink, sensual pleasure, and mortal danger reaches the English-language listener in all its glory.

A classic in one of the better translations
Revisado: 02-03-23
I have read this story more than once and in different translations. I enjoyed both Fitzgerald’s translation and Stevens’ reading of the epic. Recommended.

The White Album

Historia
First published in 1979, The White Album records indelibly the upheavals and aftermaths of the 1960s. Examining key events, figures, and trends of the era - including Charles Manson, the Black Panthers, and the shopping mall - through the lens of her own spiritual confusion, Joan Didion helped to define mass culture as we now understand it. Written with a commanding sureness of tone and linguistic precision, The White Album is a central example of American reportage and a classic of American autobiography.

Great collection of essays
Revisado: 05-27-22
Some of the essays were boring to me, but the majority were not and when they were good they were spectacular.

Historia
In this brilliantly original book, Camille Paglia identifies some of the major patterns that have endured in western culture from ancient Egypt and Greece to the present. According to Paglia, one source of continuity is paganism, which, undefeated by Judeo-Christianity, continues to flourish in art, eroticism, astrology, and pop culture. Others, she says, are androgyny, sadism, and the aggressive western eye, which has created our art and cinema.

Amazing beginnings, a bit exhausting
Revisado: 05-25-22
This is one of the best works of literary criticism that I’ve ever encountered. Particularly the first five chapters. Paglia hammers her point home, but it eventually becomes predictable. Once she’s taught you to see through her lens, it becomes hard not to do so.
That said, wow!

This book is like Scientology
Revisado: 05-04-20
I know this book has the best intentions, but it feels like the guy is trying to get you to join a cult or sell you a time share in Florida.
Still, it’s helped a lot of people quit smoking, and even if I had already quit before starting the audiobook, I must admit it motivated me to continue, even as it drove me to want cigarettes more than even as this guy kept repeating “but with Easy Way” for the 400th time or unnecessarily clarifying “you can easily quit smoking... or vaping or juuling or whatever nicotine product you are using.”
Sigh. It was brutal, but people say it helps them. Like Scientology.
Short review: It’s like Scientology.

Historia
A celebration of the language and culture of Italy, La Bella Lingua is the story of how a language shaped a nation, told against the backdrop of one woman's personal quest to speak fluent Italian. For anyone who has been to Italy, the fantasy of living the Italian life is powerfully seductive. But to truly become Italian, one must learn the language. This is how Dianne Hales began her journey. In La Bella Lingua, she brings the story of her decades-long experience with "the world's most loved and lovable language" together with explorations of Italy's history.

Terribly annoying, waste of time.
Revisado: 10-28-18
This is all cliche, no substance. Beyond the terrible story, which is basically a rich woman bragging about her many vacations in Italy, it is read in a pretentious manner. The narrator tries to switch to an Italian accent whenever she reads a name (like Dante, for example) and it's incredibly annoying. I couldn't recommend it for anyone. On one hand, it's too much information if you know nothing about Italy and, on the other hand, it's not particularly full of new information if you are familiar with Italy.
