Historia
As World War II comes to a close, the United States and the Soviet Union emerge as the two greatest world powers on extreme opposites of the political spectrum. After the United States showed its hand with the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, the Soviets refuse to be left behind. With communism sweeping the globe, the two nations begin a neck-and-neck competition to build even more destructive bombs and conquer the Space Race. In their battle for dominance, spy planes fly above, armed submarines swim deep below, and undercover agents meet in the dead of night.

Good background on events I was too young to understand at the time.
Revisado: 08-19-23
My earliest memory of public events was JFK’s assassin and my parent’s reaction and the clock on walk of the newsroom when it was announced on TV are the limits of that,
The early cold war story, particularly the resistance in Berlin were not something I learned about in school. This filled some gaps in my education. The narrator went beyond simple recitation and energized the story

Great Minds of the Eastern Intellectual Tradition

Historia
Western philosophy is a vast intellectual tradition, the product of thousands of years of revolutionary thought built up by a rich collection of brilliant minds. But to understand the Western intellectual tradition is to get only half the story. The Eastern intellectual tradition has made just as important a contribution-and is also the product of thousands of years of cumulative thought by a distinct group of brilliant thinkers. Their ideas demonstrate wholly different ways of approaching and solving the same fundamental issues that concerned the West's greatest thinkers, such as . the existence of God; . the meaning of life; and. the nature of truth and reality. This epic and comprehensive 36-lecture examination of the East's most influential philosophers and thinkers-from a much-honored teacher and scholar-offers a thought-provoking look at the surprising connections and differences between East and West. By introducing you to the people-including The Buddha, Ashoka, Prince Shotoku, Confucius, and Gandhi-responsible for molding Asian philosophy and for giving birth to a wide variety of spiritual and ideological systems, it will strengthen your knowledge of cultures that play increasingly important roles in our globalized 21st-century world.

Wonderful narration and great content
Revisado: 07-06-23
I was mixing listening as narration with reading the Kindle edition. It took a while to get used light content delivery methods in both owing to text vs. audio. If you are interested in seeing some of the technologies and discoveries talked about in the audio book, historic photographs appear in the book of many key discoveries. On the plus side, the audio-book read the text of footnotes in-line where they would appear in the text. You could see them on the Kindle, you just had to click on the *.
A must for listen or read for anyone interested in the history of scientific and manufacturing progress. Along the way I learned things about the shuttle disasters, Hubble problems, and of particular interest for me the predecessors of the modern GPS solutions. One of my first summer jobs was with the telemetry received from the early receivers for GPS so that a scientist working for DOD could figure out what was contributing to some unexpected results and work on designing around them.

Historia
In Search Of Black History with Bonnie Greer brings you face-to-face with the people you never knew existed. People whose stories tell us a different tale about who we all are. From the earliest glimmerings of modern humanity, up to the present day, Bonnie Greer uncovers the lives of people of African descent that don't fit with the accepted history of Western Civilisation we've traditionally been taught. From saints, to philosophers, to warrior women and king's heralds - these people's lives have been lost, hidden and distorted down the centuries. We've lost the full richness and complexity of our shared histories - it's time to fill in the gaps.

So much more for me to learn about
Revisado: 04-13-21
The pacing was ideal for me. I would get enough in an episode to give me things to thing about, but not so much I was overwhelmed.
I definitely want to learn more about early and pre colonial sub-Saharan African societies and their accomplishments.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

Duller than I expected.
Revisado: 07-13-20
If Trump hadn't been making so much of a fuss about publication, I wouldn't have bothered. Nothing ground breaking here. Infighting among the senior staff, Trump jumping from topic to topic during meetings without finishing out an issue. The most interesting thing to me was Bolton's take on what the Democrats did wrong on impeachment.
Those are all nightly news, not state secrets. It isn't going to change anyone's impression of Trump.

Sound volume too low much of the time.
Revisado: 06-07-20
Good performances and story.
Similar to another audible production like this the background sounds muddied the voices. That wouldn't have been too bad, but the overall maximum volume was so low I had to use an external amplifier to understand some of the dialog. I know some of this is my own hearing impairment but I don't have similar problems with most audio books. Do far it only happens with Audible Originals production that include background sounds to create "environment”

A must listen. Minor production flaw
Revisado: 09-04-19
The experiences in the concentration camps were not covered well in my history education. This first person account covering the author and his family's experiences.
The added treat of hearing Elie Wiesel’s Nobel acceptance speech makes the audiobook a living history.
The minor production flaw. The chapter list labels the labels substance of the book as the introdection (3+ hour) and additional materials as the book. Chalk it up to rearranging to get the extra material in from the new translation.

Historia
In The Genius Checklist, Dean Keith Simonton examines the key factors in creative genius and finds that they are more than a little contradictory. Simonton, who has studied creativity and genius for more than four decades, draws on both scientific research and stories from the lives of famous creative geniuses that range from Isaac Newton to Vincent van Gogh to Virginia Woolf. Simonton's checklist gives us a new, integrative way to understand geniuses - and perhaps even to nurture your own genius.

Revisado: 07-05-19
It may unavoidable but given the topic humorous. At times I thought being read by Sheldon Cooper at times the on Big Bang Theory. Both tone and pacing.
About halfway through the contradictory items on the checklist had me thinking the intent was humor.
It is more about the multiple types of genius and work involved. There is no one checklist.

Historia
From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. "Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes it as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world.

Revisado: 06-30-19
Great hearing more of her background and experience that shapes her stand-up. The longer form lets her bring out the details that are behind the one-liners. Sometimes my reaction is " I can't believe someone would ..." in response to stupid, usually male, interactions. Then every once in a while I have to admit I learned the hard way not to make some of the stupid acts that are offensive in dating.

Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Touching account of the effects of war
Revisado: 06-26-19
War affects the fighters and their families in life-altering ways. Particularly before the understanding of long term psychological damage and the damage to the brain structure by explosions.
Thank you to the author, the family of a friend of the author's father who died in the war, and the veterans who shared their emotional stories so freely to build the story.
Be prepared to listen closely as the vets and family members give their oral histories. Their age and grief occasionally make the recording hard to understand. But the impact would be lost if a narrator delivered the same information.

Wells was so much more than a science fiction writer
Revisado: 02-09-19
Focusing on the years after WW II leading up to a League of Nations, the politics of his Times echo in today's discussions.
How best to represent the common man appropriately in elections.
The power and influence of the two party system and how it results in representative legislatures that guarantee a nation more polarized than people really are.
He has rather utopian ideas of the formation of what was needed for something like the League of Nations. Capturing quite well why it could not meet its goals without a change in politics. He predicted the powerlessness of the UN given the compromises on its power and the reluctance of nations to cede power to an international body.
Surprisingly timely for commentary from the end of WW II.
