Historia
On a cold Southern night in 2013 under a full moon, 20-year-old Heather Elvis parked her car at a boat ramp along the Intracoastal Waterway and was never seen again. A series of sensational trials involving a handsome restaurant coworker and his Disneyland-obsessed wife resulted in shocking verdicts - but no body - as her family desperately sought closure and fought for justice, and a resort town struggled to regain calm.

Excellent coverage of a chilling case…
Revisado: 08-26-22
I was pleasantly surprised having learned a lot about this case already from the usual true crime sources but only just recently, many years later. Although unrevealed by me here, there’s nothing diminished in knowing the story ahead of time. Plus there were details contained either missed or not covered as well. Here the facts are presented without the insult of bias that presumes we aren’t able to think for ourselves in a style of writing and narration that is smooth and easy on the ears… I thoroughly recommend.

Historia
In 1973, Roseann Quinn, an Irish-Catholic teacher at a school for deaf children, was killed in New York City after bringing a man home to her apartment from an Upper West Side pub. The crime made headlines and the ensuing case quickly evolved into a cultural phenomenon. In this groundbreaking true crime tale, Lacey Fosburgh, the New York Times reporter first assigned to the story, utilizes an inventive dramatization technique to veer between the chilling, suspenseful personal interactions leading up to the brutal stabbing and the gritty details of its aftermath.

Best true crime writing since Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood ....
Revisado: 05-20-21
And that’s saying a lot. Since discovering the genius of Capote’s IN COLD BLOOD, coined thereafter “the true crime novel”, I’ve had trouble enjoying true crime that is at best mediocre by authors unable to emulate the brilliance of factual storytelling... storytelling that remains loyal to the truth yet through creative sequencing and character development manages to engross engage entertain rather than ask the reader to digest a dry reporting of dates and events.
Until CLOSING TIME that is. This author has grasped the idea of the true crime novel! Combined talent of a great writer with a narrator whose voice gives us character variation without showing off or overshadowing the content creates an excellent result Don’t hesitate — this is a great audiobook. Still an awful and senseless loss, yet in giving us background and a textured look into the lives of the 2 main characters, both of whom (including the victim) were demonized in previous accounts, perhaps we have a chance to understand how a chance meeting between strangers was less random than it created the ‘perfect storm’ that destroyed their lives and 2 families and loved ones and that is the true tragedy.

Historia
On a snowy winter evening in 1982, 21-year-old Mary Brown accepted a ride from a handsome stranger in the resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The trip ended with her brutally beaten and raped. Mary survived, but her predator's violence had only just begun. After 10 years in prison, Tom Luther was released a far more vicious criminal. Soon, from the Rockies to West Virginia, like Ted Bundy, Luther enticed a chain of women into his murderous trap.

Riveting....harrowingly so.
Revisado: 07-24-20
Giving Steve Jackson another chance in my love for the narrator Kevin Pierce and in my pain and boredom of 23 straight days in the hospital...I am more than midway through this and doing what I’ve never done. Stopping to review for what I am grateful and deeply upset over. The focus on the victims is harrowing. I am a victim who relates to the survival instinct and that’s as much as I can say about it. But after turning away from this author after “Bogeyman” where my bleeding heart sensed deep bias against the accused (yeah go figure),this story has me cheering for Steve Jackson as the reporting on a monster is as real and good as I can handle .... I think I’ll rethink my bleeding heart although I do believe in the presumption of innocence. I also believe in survival and thank Steve Jackson for his sensitive and heart-felt characterization of the surviving victim Mary ..... Amen. This is personal and this author has done well by me. Not only that, I’m unable to sleep and grateful for the reason to care less about that than justice for a true monster. You will not go wrong on this credit or purchase. This is Jack Olsen-Tom Henderson level nonfiction. As I finished the book and now lay in harrowing ‘rehab’ I will add that this maintainsed its icannot put it down kind of listen. Bravo. I want to meet this police investigator detective of pure honor - Scott

Jack Olsen & Kevin Pierce... you cannot go wrong.
Revisado: 07-24-20
Is it fair that I tap my fingers on the table impatiently imploring Jack Olsen to produce another masterpiece .... but I do. Monthly in fact I ask that he crank out another nonfiction novel comparable to the work of Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” which was never demanded of that great author..... once. [although his untimely death made that impossible.] True crime in the animal kingdom? As long as Jack Olsen & Kevin Pierce’s talent created “The Night of the Grizzlies” .... I recommend an absolute stunner. So what’s up Jack. And if you’ve missed “Cold Kill” ... lucky you. Enjoy.

Oscar Wilde brings his enormous gifts for astute social observation and sparkling prose to The Picture of Dorian Gray, the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. This dandy, who remains forever unchanged---petulant, hedonistic, vain, and amoral---while a painting of him ages and grows increasingly hideous with the years, has been horrifying and enchanting readers for more than 100 years.

Superb writing and the narration adds just the right amount of performance to augment —not overwhelm — the author’s work. Refreshing change for me from true crime to what was so far above all but a handful of writers in that genre. I understand the limitations of non fiction but if Truman Capote could do it why not anyone but Jack Olsen since....

Terrific suspensel —well written well read
Revisado: 03-04-20
You won’t go wrong on this one. Not unless you prefer bad writing and plenty of gratuitous gore neither which I found in this formerly unknown case and a new writer who I hope writes more in this genre. She’s thorough and thoroughly engrossing with interesting details of an interrogation for example and the amount of planning and practice that still leaves a lot up to chance. I felt the nerves of as though I was in the room or knew the victim. This audiobook had me leaning forward in my car seat and in no hurry to get where I was going . A fascinating and terrifying look at a killer without motive or conscience.

Unabridged version missed majority of the story ..
Revisado: 10-01-19
Where is the full book ? which should be about a 10-hr read as opposed to this 2-hr mini version that feels very incomplete. There’s bad news and good news. The bad news is it’s way too short and misses so much. But since the author Ann Rule chose to do the narration herself with her baby talk voice, the abbreviated version is also the good news. I wonder if there’s an audiobook available of the entire book, hopefully read by Kevin Pierce or another talented narrator who doesn’t wreck the story the way the author’s reading did. I can’t comment on this audiobook until something that represents more than only a fraction of the original story is available

Historia
Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore had a lot in common: They sang together in the Methodist church choir, their daughters were best friends, and their husbands had good jobs working for technology companies in the North Dallas suburbs known as Silicon Prairie. But beneath the placid surface of their seemingly perfect lives, both women simmered with unspoken frustrations and unanswered desires. On a hot summer day in 1980, the secret passions and jealousies that linked Candy and Betty exploded into murderous rage.

Enthralling and with a little mystery too...
Revisado: 08-22-19
I am an avid true crimes reader and forever spoiled by the writing brilliance of Truman Capote in his masterpiece, IN COLD BLOOD. Some of Jack Olsen’s books have come close, especially with Kevin Pierce narrating. Then I found this one that I truly enjoyed—EVIDENCE OF LOVE is worth it. A fascinating well-told story that manages to dangle a little mystery as well (for those of us who yearn for the twists and surprises usually absent in this genre). Trust me, this is a good one.

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Really well done... introducing a new style that works ...
Revisado: 02-02-19
You won’t go wrong with this one. A varied narrative by those directly involved both in an official investigative capacity as well as victims and surviving loved ones makes for an interesting mix of perspective. Like a podcast without the cross talking chit chat that can turn me off when it becomes more about the telling than the story ...maybe a little too much spontaneity to keep it crisp and succinct. Not here though. Excellent presentation.

The characters become very real and his portrayal of the victim paid honor to the parents. A little too political
Revisado: 10-30-17
I love the intricacies of the justice system, especially engrossed by the trial itself. Nothing that teaches me bores me. Steve Jackson does an exquisite job at introducing us to the characters. He did this so well with the victim that I grieved over the senseless loss of a sparkling lovely girl. But as with the last book by this author, Bogey Man, somewhere after killers are arrested and trial is imminent, Jackson’s political views come out with a vengeance that crushes emotions that his brilliant characterization had created and the mood is all cerebral. Politics. Pro prosecution anti defense. It’s not that I don’t agree with him in this case (I’m no as familiar with the sleazy tactics the public defenders resorted to but if he would please write a book on the murder of Travis Alexander — now that line of a dishonest shameful defense went about as low as one could imagine. ...). Through the first 16-18 chapters I was mesmerized and then very moved by writing that connected me to Jacine. That’s a skill this author wastes when his political views hit you with a hammer. I’d like to tell the author that I’d likely reach the same conclusion if I were allowed to with the facts of the case — his political stance jumps in and take away my chance to arrive there on my own. Maybe that’s it — he doesn’t think the readers will get it. But I think he’s wrong to think he could raise his expectations He’s too good a writer for us NOT to get it.
